The day flash flooding hit Essex

Thanks for joining our live coverage of flash flooding across parts of Essex. Let's recap on events that took place today:

Flash flooding in Essex
  • A yellow weather warning was issued for Essex between midnight and midday as persistent heavy rain hit the county overnight and into this morning
  • Essex Fire and Rescue says it was called to 13 different flood incidents around the county
  • In Southend, staff at the Tesco Extra had to clean up flood water that entered the store, and in Canvey surface water dampened what was meant to be a busy start to half-term
  • There are currently no more flood warnings for Essex, according to the Environment Agency's website

Rain forces Essex to settle for a draw against Northants

BBC Sport

It wasn't to be for Essex after they were forced to settle for a draw against Northamptonshire due to the inclement weather.

The visitors required six wickets at the County Ground to clinch the win but rain closed in and halted play from 11:25. It was abandoned just after 16:50.

It's not all bad news though, as Essex remain top of Division Two.

'Thoughtless' drivers splashing Canvey kiosk

Time to hear from some more business owners on Canvey affected by flooding today. This is Lea Swann, who runs the Fantasy Island Kiosk on Eastern Esplanade.

Thoughtless drivers have been driving too fast and splashing my kiosk... All the way along the seafront there's a massive amount of water, but here it seems to be worse."

Wet weather keeps Essex cricketers indoors as well

It's not just here that rain is disrupting matters. Essex cricketers are stuck indoors as the wet weather hits Northamptonshire.

Essex could do with some sunshine, otherwise the match is likely to end in a draw. Follow play (if there is any) here.

Canvey is 'sick of promises' over flood elevation

Richard Smith

BBC Essex

The people of Canvey are "sick of promises" when it comes to solutions to fixing their flood problems, according to one local councillor.

Castle Point district councillor Barry Campagna, of the Canvey Island Independent Party, was speaking to me from a flood-plagued Furtherwick Road earlier this morning.

Cllr Barry Campagna

There's nobody here, the whole of the seafront is empty, the kids are off school and it should be buzzing... The drains can't take the amount of surface water on Canvey, they're so old that they don't know where some of them even go, and there's no extra money."

We really are the county that everybody is talking about today:

  • The Mail Online reports that parts of Essex have suffered flooding and forecasters expect up to 2.4in (6cm) of rain to fall within a few hours today
  • ITV says intense thunderstorms bring nearly a month's worth of rain in six hours

Meanwhile, the Echo has uploaded a video of the clean-up at an arcade along Southend seafront that was flooded earlier this morning.

How not to start half-term on Canvey Island...

This isn't the start to half-term Canvey business owner Suzanne Gray was hoping for.

Suzanne Gray

Instead of floods of families entering her arcade on Furtherwick Road, she's having to deal with actual flooding, and it's happened several times recently.

"I've been here 20 years. The last three years it seems to be getting worse and worse," she said.

BBC Essex caller on Canvey flooding

Jack Warren

BBC Local Live

BBC Essex has been hearing from callers reporting localised flooding in some areas.

John on Canvey Island is one of those. He told Sadie Nine that his street, Hellendoorn Road, was under about 1ft (0.3m) of water.

"It's coming up to the edge of the pavement; some properties it's overlapped into their front gardens. The rain is easing, but any more and we could see problems," he said.

Tom has tweeted us these photos taken close to Southend seafront this morning...
