  5. Darren Kelly murder trial: Jury sent home for the evening

    The jury in the trial of four people, including three teenagers, who are accused of murdering Darren Kelly in Pitsea has been sent home for the day.

    The 42-year-old was fatally stabbed last October. The accused have denied the charges. 

    The jury will continue with its deliberations at Chelmsford Crown Court tomorrow.

  6. Jewellery worth £12k stolen in Basildon burglary

    Gold jewellery worth almost £12,000 has been stolen from a house in Basildon, police say.

    Thieves also took a white Honda CBR 600 motorbike, more than 500 Euros, a Swarovski braclet, and a number of other items during the break-in in Dordells on 12 May. 

    Anybody offered any of these items for sale is asked to call Basildon CID on 101. 

  7. CCTV released after chair is thrown in Coral bookmakers

    Do you recognise this man? Police want to speak to him after a char was thrown over the counter at a Coral bookmakers in Brentwood last month.

    Police say the chair struck the leg of a member of staff following the incident in the High Street on 29 April.

  11. Large group of men raid Tesco store in Harlow

    A large group of men have raided a Tesco supermarket in Harlow stealing several mobile phones, police say.

    The suspects are believed to have forced open a door to an associated Costa Coffee to get in, before threatening staff at the store in Edinburgh Way at about 01:05.

    The men, who arrived in a Ford van, were all wearing tracksuit bottoms and dark hooded tops with scarves over their faces. 

    A man, 18, and a 15-year-old boy have been arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary.

  12. Man spends weekend training inside giant hamster wheel

    Chances are, my weekend and your weekend were quite a lot different to Dean Ovel's - unless you spent a couple of days running in a giant hamster wheel?

    The 40-year-old has been practising for his 24-hour run inside the in the 8ft (2.4m) wooden wheel that begins on Saturday in Southend High Street. 

    Mr Ovel is hoping to raise money for the newly launched £100,000 dementia appeal at the town's hospital.

  13. Belgian beer offer makes Bible class 'very popular'

    The Anglican vicar of Saint Mary's Church in Wivenhoe has a waiting list for his Bible study class after offering Belgian beer as part of the course.

    Father Erwin Lammens advertised in his parish magazine four Monday evening sessions on learning about the rule of Saint Benedict and its relevance from the Bible. 

    Within days the course, which began last week, was full up. He says it's probably the offer of Belgian trappist beers, at end of each session that's made it so popular.

  14. Browne's marathon innings comes to an end

    That's it for Nick Browne in his marathon innings. He was caught at mid-off for 255. 

    He managed to reach 250 off 440 balls, including one six and 33 fours.

  15. Stanford-le-Hope shooting: Police appeal for motorbike rider who could help investigation

    Remember last week a man was shot in Stanford-le-Hope while he was in his van? Well today Essex Police says it wants to trace a motorcyclist who may be able to help its investigation.

    It happened in London Road on Tuesday at about 19:00. The suspect is thought to have been driving a silver Mercedes C-class saloon which drove off at speed.

    Police are keen to speak to a motorcyclist who was in the area at the time and was passed by a silver Mercedes as he may have vital information that could assist them.

  16. Browne hits double century for Essex

  18. Jury retires in Darren Kelly murder trial

    The jury has retired in the trial of a man and three teenagers who are accused of murdering Darren Kelly.

    Mr Kelly, 42, was fatally stabbed near his home in Pitsea last October. All four denied the charges at Chelmsford Crown Court.

  20. Ducklings hatch at Stansted Mounfitchet Castle

    If you're suffering from the Monday blues then hopefully the news that ducklings have hatched at Stansted Mounfitchet Castle this morning will cheer you up.

    Daisy Duck is said to have come "proudly waddling" out from underneath the tower earlier today followed by her newly hatched brood of ducklings. 

    The attraction says none of the staff knew she was nesting on the site so it was a "lovely surprise".
