  3. Southend murder victim had 'battled childhood leukaemia'

    A "charismatic and humorous" teenager murdered in Southend last month had previously fought leukaemia, it has emerged.

    Today the "heartbroken" family of Nico Ramasay, who died after being stabbed in Napier Avenue on 13 February, paid tribute to the 19-year-old.

    "He was a caring and genuine young man who loved his brothers, nieces, nephews and cousin, always encouraging and supporting them to do well", Mr Ramasay's family said.

  6. Takeaway delivery driver robbed of three-figure sum of cash

    A Braintree takeaway delivery driver has been robbed of a three-figure sum of cash, police say.

    The 20-year-old man was dropping off food in Northumberland Close at about 20:00 on Saturday when he was approached by two men. 

    The victim is said to have been left "badly shaken up by this incident" and is no longer working as a delivery driver as a result.

  7. Ministers to consider Essex ex-banker Libor conviction transfer request

    Ministers have insisted they will carefully consider any request to allow an ex-banker from Essex convicted of fixing the Libor interest rate to return to the UK to serve his sentence.

    Anthony Conti, from Westcliff-on-Sea, is reportedly due to be sentenced by a US judge this week after he was found guilty of a series of fraud charges last November. 

    Conservative MP for Southend West, Sir David Amess, made the plea on behalf of his constituent in the Commons today. Justice Minister Andrew Selous said "careful consideration" would be given to any transfer application.

  8. Police investigating Vilson Meshi murder release CCTV

    Police investigating the murder of a 30-year-old in Pitsea have released CCTV of somebody on a bike they would like to trace.

    Vilson Meshi was found dead inside a burned Audi A4 on Pincey Mead, near Pitsea Road, on 27 February. Four teenagers arrested over his death have been bailed. 

    Det Ch Insp Stephen Jennings said: "This person was captured on CCTV in Pincey Mead in the early hours of the morning before Vilson’s body was discovered... I need to find this person to understand what they were doing in the area at that time."

  9. Manslaughter sentence 'will never bring my son back'

    After Abdulfatah Suleiman was jailed for 16 years for the manslaughter of Anton Levin (pictured) in Southend, Mr Levin's mother released the following statement:

  10. Woman has handbag stolen while visiting mother's grave

    Liz Cundy was visiting her mum's grave on Mother's Day when thieves broke into her car and stole her handbag. 

    Essex Police says it's one of three recent incidents of robberies at Chelmsford Crematorium in Writtle Road. 

    Ms Cundy, who is from Braintree, told us she's devastated.

  12. Former Essex County Council worker jailed for inciting underage sex

    A former worker at Essex County Council has been jailed for 16 months for accessing official records to try to force a 15-year-old girl to have sex with him.

    Aaron Whitman, 26, of Pirie Road, West Bergholt, repeatedly contacted the schoolgirl via a fake Facebook account, to offer her cash for sex, Ipswich Crown Court heard.

    Whitman, who pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and misconduct in a public office, must stay on the sex offenders register for 10 years.

  13. Essex cricketers travel 4,000 miles to Abu Dhabi - but match is cancelled

    Essex County Cricket Club have travelled over 4,000 miles toAbu Dhabi for a pre-season friendly - only for a match to be postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

    The team were due to play Worcestershire in a T20 match as part of their United Arab Emirates Tour. 

    The club's groundsman saw the funny side though. He tweeted: "Ground fit at Chelmsford today if they want to pop back for a match!"

    Earlier today Essex Police announced that it was investigating allegations of the sexual abuse of children in care in the 1980s and 1990s. Here's what we know so far:

  16. Man jailed for manslaughter of graduate in Southend

    A man who fled the country following the death of a university graduate has been jailed for 16 years.

    Anton Levin, from Dagenham, was stabbed at a house in St Anns Road, Southend on 19 November 2014. 

    Abdulfatah Suleiman, 28, was arrested in Norway and extradited back to the UK. After being convicted of manslaughter last month, Suleiman was today handed a 16-year sentence at Chelmsford Crown Court.

  17. Council leader speaks on historical child abuse allegations

    Essex County Council says it has been "made aware" of historical child abuse allegations in relation to members of its staff in the 1980s and 1990s.

    David Finich, the council leader, said in a statement the accusations were "very serious". 

    "We know that concerns were investigated at that time by the council and Essex Police, appropriate actions were taken in accordance with the evidence available", he said. 

  18. Police child sex abuse probe: 'There could be more than 40 victims'

    More than 40 victims could be involved in a historical child sex abuse investigation announced today by Essex Police, the county's Police and Crime Commissioner Nick Alston has said.

    The force announced this morning that it was investigating allegations of sex abuse of children in care in the 1980s and 1990s. 

    Mr Alston told BBC Essex: "The concerns of the professionals who spoke to us were that there were more, many more victims - perhaps more than 40 victims - who may not have had the right kind of safeguarding."

  20. Thieves steal child's money box in Pilgrims Hatch

    A child's money box is among the items stolen in a burglary near Brentwood, police say.

    Thieves raided the property in Osborne Road, Pilgrims Hatch on 1 March. 

    The box contained a three-figure sum of cash. A smart TV, and an Apple Macbook were also taken.
