  2. Rail commuters facing delays at Chelmsford

    Train operator Greater Anglia says an earlier train fault has led to delays on services from London via Chelmsford.

  4. Weather: Winds easing with scattered evening showers clearing

    Any showers will slowly die out and clear southeastwards during the first part of the night and the winds will ease. A frost is likely to develop in some places too.

    It will cloud over for a time tomorrow morning with showery rain. Drier and brighter conditions with sunny spells will move in for the afternoon, but it'll feel cold in the brisk winds.

    The family of a missing 16-year-old girl from Saffron Walden say they are concerned for her welfare.

    Elise Webb was last seen this morning at about 08:30 after she was dropped off at Audley End railway station. 

    She is described as 5ft 8in (1.72m), and was last seen wearing black jeans, a black leather-style jacket, a purple long-sleeved turtleneck top and a blue fleece.

  7. BT's broadband and phone network is down in parts of Essex

    If you're a BT customer, you may find you have problems with your phone and broadband as the network is down in parts of the UK.

    Down detector, a website that monitors internet failures, is reporting thousands of cases in places including Colchester.

    A BT spokesman said: "It is true that we are down at the moment. We are aware of the problems and are working on them as fast as we can."

  9. 'Courageous' elderly woman locks armed robber inside home

    An elderly woman has been hailed as "courageous" by police after she locked an armed robber inside her home as he tried to burgle her.

    Essex Police says the man forced his way inside the 80-year-old's property in Cedar Road, Canvey Island, yesterday evening and threatened her with a knife.

    When she saw a chance to escape, she locked the man inside the house so that she could tell a neighbour. However, the suspect managed to get out, taking a three figure sum of cash.

  10. Billiercay car vandalism: Resident finds 'bullet-shaped' hole in car window

    Karen Jury is without the car she depends on for work for the second time in 12 days after vandals returned to Hurlock Way in Billericay, smashing the side windows of nine vehicles.

    "I had two windows completely shattered, in one of them there was a little round hole, it looked like a pellet or bullet shape," Karen told BBC Essex.

    "I have not slept since the last attack, they're not interested in the houses, they're not interested in nicking anything, it's purely just damage for the fun of it."

  11. Castle Point named as most anxious place in England

    Castle Point has been named the most anxious place in England, according to official statistics.

    Data collected over three years has been used to measure the wellbeing of more than 300,000 people across the UK.

    It found more people in the south Essex borough class their anxiety at the higher end of the scale, while the happiest bunch in the country are said to be living in Mid Sussex.

  12. Vandals smash car windows for the second time in two weeks

    I'm in Billericay where residents in Hurlock Way have had their cars vandalised for the second time in less than two weeks.

    Windows were smashed on nine parked vehicles at about 00:10 this morning - a similar incident happened here on 22 January.

    Essex Police says it is not known at this time how the damage was caused. More on this shortly. 

  13. Elderly man hospitalised after being hit by bus

    We have more details on a crash between a bus and a pedestrian in St Osyth Road in Clacton-on-Sea.

    The East of England Ambulance Service says a pedestrian in his 80s has been taken to hospital with hip injuries following the collision.

    His injuries aren't thought to be life-threatening.

  15. Southend prepares for a royal vistior

    The Duke of Kent is taking a trip to Southend-on-Sea today as he officially opens the town's new library.

    The Queen's cousin will be given a tour of The Forum before he unveils a plaque to officially commemorate its opening.

  16. Nine people arrested after Boxing Day football derby disturbance

    Nine people have been arrested in connection with a large disturbance that took place in Colchester shortly before the Essex derby on Boxing Day, police say.

    The incident is said to have taken place in Abbey Gate at about 14:00, an hour before Colchester United v Southend United kicked off at the Community Stadium. 

    Three teenagers, aged 16, 17 and 18, plus six other men, have been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and released on police bail. Both football clubs are helping the force with its investigation.
