  2. Distinctive charity car stolen

    A man from Manningtree says he is devastated after a 1989 Vauxhall Nova that was used for a charity event was stolen. 

    Ashley Martin drove 2,000 miles across the country this weekend, raising a total of £6,500 for care home Acorn Village and Children with Cancer UK. He says the car is very distinctive and would "stand out like a sore thumb."

  4. Signed Beatles photo sells for £5,000

    A signed photograph of the Beatles has sold for £5,000 at an auction in Southend.

    Stacey's auctioneers in Rayleigh said the photo was signed when the band appeared in the town in 1963.

    It was bought by an online buyer in Switzerland for more than double the amount it was estimated to sell at.

  5. Stolen puppy's owner steps up security

    The owner of a stolen puppy worth at least £1,000 says she will be increasing security at her home in West Horndon.

    The nine-week-old Maltese terrier puppy called Pickle was taken from Adele Rowley's kitchen yesterday during a burglary, in which her car was also stolen but her other dog - a three-year-old Maltese terrier - was left behind.She said: "I’ve only had Pickle a week but have grown really attached to her. My other dog is missing her too – her tail has been down since she was taken."         

  6. Power firm fined over £1m after runner electrocuted

    A power company has been ordered to pay more than £1m after a runner was electrocuted on a footpath in north Essex.

    James Kew, 41, died in July 2012 after coming into contact with an 11,000-volt cable which had come down in a field at Debden Road, Newport. UK Power Networks, which admitted breaching health and safety law at Chelmsford Crown Court, was today fined £1m and told to pay costs of over £150,000. 

  7. Extra medical checks for airshow pilots

    Clacton Airshow display pilots will face extra medical checks under new rules announced by the Civil Aviation to tighten safety after the Shoreham air crash.

    There were discussions over whether to cancel the event last year, which went ahead shortly after the accident.Organisers will also have to complete stricter risk assessments that could see some shows near busy roads cancelled.   

  8. Braintree Town's pitch looking good

    Officials say the pitch at Braintree Town has "dried out nicely" but will be checked ahead of tonight's clash with Wrexham.


    The game is set to be the Iron's first home league game since November 28 - when they drew 0-0 with Torquay.

  9. Man arrested following stabbing

    A 59-year-old man has been arrested following a stabbing in Clacton. Police were called to Groom Park at about 12:15 where they found a man in his 30s with puncture wounds to his shoulder and hand.

  11. Kevin Maher happy to stay in charge of Chelmsford City

    Kevin Maher says he's happy to carry on in charge of Chelmsford City for as long as the chairman wants him there. 

    The Southend United youth coach took temporary charge last week following Mark Hawkes' departure.

    Maher (pictured) made more than 450 appearances for the Shrimpers in his playing career.

  13. New tunnel could cost up to £5bn

    New plans for a multi-billion pound road tunnel under the River Thames between Kent and Essex are designed to ease congestion, with 140,000 vehicles a day using the existing crossing.

    It could cost up to £5bn and the option that Highways England has chosen is the most expensive.

    If approved, it will pass through undeveloped green belt land, ancient woodland and the Thames Marshes.

    Missing girl Megan Love has been found this afternoon in Basildon, police say. 

    The 16-year-old had been missing from her home in the town since 00:30 on Monday.

  16. Public exhibitions to be held over new tunnel

    Highways England says there will be 24 public exhibitions, held at venues across Kent and Essex, about plans to build a new tunnel.

    It will be the first new crossing of the Thames east of London since the Queen Elizabeth II bridge opened at Dartford 25 years ago.

  18. Puppy stolen during burglary

    A woman from West Horndon has spoken of her distress after her car and her nine-week old puppy were stolen during a burglary yesterday.

    Pickle, a white Maltese terrier, and a black Range Rover Sport were stolen from Adele Rowley's house on Petresfield Way.

    Ms Rowley said: "I just can’t understand why someone would take Pickle and need to know she is being fed and looked after."

  19. Differences of opinion on new multi-billion pound tunnel plan

    A new multi-billion pound road link across the River Thames between Essex and Kent could contribute more than £7bn to the economy, according to Roads Minister Andrew Jones.


    However, the Labour leader of Thurrock Council, John Kent, said he would be fighting "tooth and nail" against plans to build the new Lower Thames Crossing within the borough. He said it was a worrying time for local residents.
