    It will be cold with patchy cloud and clear spells overnight, though we may still see the odd wintry shower at times, particularly near the coast. Minimum Temperature: -1C (30F).

    Tomorrow wintry showers are likely to become more frequent through the day but we should still see some sunny spells. It will still feel cold but winds will be lighter than today.

  5. Family 'betrayed' by care home abuse, CPS says

    The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has sent us a statement regarding the three women who today pleaded guilty to the assault of an elderly woman at a Braintree care home.

    CPS East of England District Crown Prosecutor Doug Mackay said: "When a loved one is admitted into a care home, their family trusts the staff to look after them and treat them with respect. 

    "By their guilty pleas, these three women have shown that they assaulted Joan Maddison and betrayed the trust placed in them by her family."

  6. West Ham's Hendrie coming to Southend on loan

    Southend United have completed the loan signing of West Ham left-back Stephen Hendrie.

    The 21-year-old could play in time for tomorrow's League One match at Peterborough.

    The former Hamilton defender has joined the Blues on an initial 31-day period.

  8. Old Deanery Care home abuse 'completely unacceptable', police say

    Essex Police has described the actions of three women who were filmed assaulting an elderly woman at a Braintree care home as "completely unacceptable".

    Earlier on, Anita Ray, Lorna Clark, and Adeshola Adewura pleaded guilty to assault following an undercover investigation at the Old Deanery Care home by the BBC's Panorama programme. 

    Det Ch InspStephen Jennings said: "I can think of no greater breach of trust than through the actions carried out by these three."

  9. Bernard Cribbins OBE visits Colchester's barracks

    Dr Who and The Wombles star Bernard Cribbins OBE has visited Colchester's Merville Barracks to relive his days as a paratrooper.

    Before his stage and screen career, Mr Cribbins did National Service with 3rd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment between 1947 and 1949, serving in Palestine and Germany.

    Today the 87-year-old climbed aboard the barrack's Dakota before presenting £17,500 to the regiment's official charity.

  10. Braintree bring in Anderson on loan

    National League side Braintree Town have signed Peterborough midfielder Harry Anderson on loan until the end of April.

    Anderson has not featured for the Posh since coming on as a substitute in a 1-1 draw at Port Vale in October.

    The 18-year-old has made 17 career appearances for the League One club, but has yet to score a goal.

  11. Tributes paid to 'caring' road crash victim

    Tributes have been paid to an Essex care worker who died following a road crash in Hadleigh earlier this month.

    Phillippa Nunn, 44, who worked as a carer at a residential home, died after colliding with a car on the A13 on 7 January.

    Today Mrs Nunn's family said she was "a joy to be around", a very "caring person" whose death has left "a very big gap" in their lives.

  12. How do councils get grit on to our roads?

    While visiting Southend's salt dome, I was told the council's gritting team uses four lorries and four quad bikes to spread a mixture of rock salt and molasses on roads and pavements.

    At the end of every run, the vehicles are emptied and washed.  

    The salt is returned to the storage barn to keep it dry for another outing.

  13. Laura Davies murder: Loss of daughter still 'very hard to deal with'

    The parents of Laura Davies say the death of their daughter is still "very hard to deal with".

    Speaking outside Chelmsford Crown Court after Jordan Taylor was sentenced, Miss Davies' mother Dyanne Lambert said: "We are glad he'll be off the streets for a very long time".

    John Davies added: "We thank the justice system for their work and for the sentence."

  14. Jordan Taylor a 'devious, jealous and ruthless' individual, judge says

    A judge has described a man jailed for life for the murder of Laura Davies as a "devious, jealous and ruthless" individual.

    Jordan Taylor, 22, of Basildon will spend a minimum of 23 years behind bars after he was found guilty of murdering his 21-year-old girlfriend in Pitsea last year. 

    Speaking at Chelmsford Crown Court today, Judge Charles Gratwicke told him: "This was an appalling killing and you have shown not a shred of remorse through the trial for your actions.”

  15. Vandals damage 17 cars overnight in Stifford Clays

    Seventeen cars have been damaged in a spate of incidents in one night in Stifford Clays, police say. 

    The vehicles parked in Crammavill Street, Whitmore Avenue, Fairway, Gourney Grove, and John Clay Gardens had their wing mirrors damaged overnight on 9 January. 

    Essex Police says the incidents are being linked. 

  16. Cold snap calls Southend gritters into action

    Today I've been to a dome in Southend where an estimated 1,700 tonnes of gritter salt is stored.

    The council says it can hold 2,000 tonnes - the amount it would need to last a significantly poor and prolonged winter. 

    The gritters expect to be busy in the coming days as the cold snap continues.

  17. Boy, 15, assaulted in Basildon park

    Essex Police is investigating after a 15-year-old boy was punched in the face in a park in Basildon.

    The force says the assault happened in Kingswood Park on Sunday at about 14:00.

    The boy was attacked by another boy who was part of a larger group. 

  18. Three women plead guilty to Braintree care home abuse

    Three women have pleaded guilty to assaulting an elderly resident at an Essex care home.

    The care workers were charged following an undercover investigation by the BBC's Panorama programme into the Old Deanery Care home near Braintree. 

    Anita Ray, Lorna Clark and Adeshola Adewura will be sentenced at Chelmsford Crown Court in February.
