  4. Cannabis farm accused appear in court

    Three men have appeared in court charged with producing a cannabis farm in Boreham.

    Almost 1,000 plants were found at an industrial unit in Waltham Road on Tuesday after two police officers had become suspicious about the smell coming from the building. 

    Hai Van Pham, 19, who is unemployed of no fixed address and two other 17-year-old men, also of no fixed address, were remanded in custody until March.

  5. 'Dangerous' and 'idiotic' behaviour of people placing debris in roads

    The behaviour of people who have been deliberately placing debris in the road in Tiptree has been described as "dangerous" and "idiotic" by Essex Police.Chief Inspector Nick Lee said: "I urgently need to speak to anyone else who has cleared these objects from the road and still have them in their possession, as they could assist our investigation."

  6. Dashcam footage of damage from debris placed in road

    A taxi driver suffered £4,000 of damage to his vehicle after he struck rocks, wood and a metal sign that were deliberately placed in the road on Grange Road, Tiptree, on December 20. 

    Essex Police released the dashcam footage as it warned there have been more than ten incidents of debris being left in roads in the last few weeks.

    Four cars and a bus have been affected and police believe the culprits have been using footpaths to escape.

  7. Police warn motorists after debris placed in road

    Essex Police are warning road users to take extra caution after debris - including barbed wire, concrete slabs and wooden stakes - was placed in the road deliberately in Tiptree on multiple occasions.

    They want to trace two suspects seen throwing concrete onto the B1022 Colchester Road on December 29 at 21:28.

    They were a white man, aged 20 to 30, wearing camouflage trousers and an orange and grey top, and a woman, aged 20 to 30, wearing grey and black clothing including leggings.

  8. Care home murder victim died from gunshot wound to head

    A pensioner was understood to be suffering from dementia before she was shot dead at a care home in Walton.

    A post-mortem examination found the provisional cause of Rita King's death was a gunshot wound to the head, Chelmsford Crown Court heard.

    Essex Police said the bullet came from what was believed to be a 1934 Enfield revolver, which was found at the scene.

  9. Disability campaigner becomes MBE

    Disability campaigner Lucy Watts, from Benfleet, said it was "a lovely surprise" to become an MBE. 

    The 22-year-old, who has Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, said she decided to dedicate her life to helping others while writing her end-of-life plan, due to a fear she would die without having made a difference. 

    She advocates for young people with disabilities and life-limiting conditions, working with five different charities.

  10. Chigwell shooting: CCTV released

    Detectives investigating a shooting in Chigwell have released CCTV images of three men they want to speak to.A 22-year-old man from London suffered a gunshot wound to his upper body at an address in Limes Avenue on 11 July.Police say the men were on the Limes Farm estate by flats known locally as Yellow Block between 21:30 and 21.50 and asked anyone with information to get in touch.

  11. Harlow man wanted over threats to kill

    A 21-year-old from Harlow is wanted by police for questioning over allegations of threats to kill made in early December.

    Jason Gittens, whose last known address is St Edmunds Way in Harlow, is believed to still be in the Harlow area and may be staying with friends, police say.

  12. Pensioner charged with wife's murder appears via video link from prison

    Ronald King, 86, appeared via video link from Chelmsford Prison after being charged with the murder of his wife Rita, 81 (pictured), who died at her care home in Walton-on-the-Naze from gunshot wounds.

    He wore a grey tracksuit during the hearing at Chelmsford Crown Court, which lasted for 10 minutes.

    A provisional trial date was set for 4 July.

  14. Hospice worker becomes MBE after 25 years' service

    A woman who works for a hospice in Chelmsford has become an MBE in the New Year Honours list for her services to nursing. 

    Beverley Barclay, director of clinical services at The J’s Hospice, has been working in the sector for 25 years and launched the hospice-at-home service which supports young adults with life-limiting conditions across Essex. 

    “For me, this is for the patients and families that I’ve cared for and the staff that I’ve worked with over the years who have taught me so much," she said.

  16. Pitsea death: Second man arrested

    A man found dead in a stairwell yesterday in Pitsea has yet to be formally identified but is believed to be aged in his 30s, police say.

    A second man, a 37-year-old from the Basildon area, was arrested last night on suspicion of manslaughter and is currently in custody awaiting questioning.Det Ch Insp Simon Werrett said: "At this stage we are not looking for anyone else and we believe the victim and those in custody knew each other."

  17. Pitsea stairwell death 'no longer murder'

    The death of a man in Appleford Court, Pitsea, is now being treated as manslaughter following a post mortem examination, Essex Police has said.

    Officers were called at 00:30 yesterday to Appleford Court, where the victim was found dead in a communal stairwell.

    A 50-year-old man from the Basildon area arrested yesterday for murder still remains in custody but is now under arrest for manslaughter.

  19. Pensioner appears in court charged with wife's murder

    I'm at Chelmsford Crown Court where 86-year-old Ronald King has just appeared charged with the murder of his wife Rita (pictured) at a care home in Walton-on-the-Naze.

    Mr King, of Cedar Close, Walton, is accused of shooting 81-year-old Rita at De La Mer House on Monday.

    A Plea and Case Management hearing has been scheduled for 3 March.

  20. Medal stolen was awarded for bravery at munitions factory

    Jewellery, watches, a camera and some reading glasses were also taken when burglars broke into a house in Waltham Abbey on Christmas Day, but owner Alan Spillett says it is the theft of his late father's British Empire Medal that has been the most difficult to cope with.

    His father Frederick (pictured) worked at a munitions factory in the town where, in 1955, he saved the life of a workman who had come into contact with a live power cable.
