  2. Weather: Some rain overnight, but a bright start tomorrow

    It will be wet and windy to begin with this evening as Storm Frank begins to clear through overnight. Following this, some clear and dry spells will develop, and winds will begin to ease.

    Tomorrow is likely to be slightly cooler, but the weather will be mainly fine and dry.

  3. Alastair Cook: England have made 'big strides'

    England have taken "big strides forward over the last eight months", said captain and Essex batsman Alastair Cook after his side eased to a 241-run victory in South Africa.

    The visitors claimed six wickets for just 38 runs on day five to win the first Test in Durban.

    Cook said: "Potentially this team can do some really good things... There's so much talent in this side but it will take relentless hard work."

  7. Police officers sniff out cannabis factory while cycling past

    A large cannabis farm has been discovered in Boreham, near Chelmsford, after police officers became suspicious of the smell while cycling past.

    Large cannabis crop discovred

    Essex Police says a search warrant was executed in Waltham Road yesterday which uncovered a crop of almost 1,000 plants. 

    Three men have been arrested on suspicious of the cultivation of cannabis and are currently being held at Chelmsford police station. 

  8. Man, 86, accused of wife's murder to spend another night in custody

    An 86-year-old man accused of murdering his wife in a Walton-on-the-Naze care home will spend another night in custody after appearing in court this morning.

    Ronald King (pictured) of Cedar Close, Walton-on-the-Naze, appeared before Chelmsford Magistrates' Court accused of shooting his 81-year-old wife Rita.

    Mrs King died at De La Mer House in Naze Park Road on Monday. Mr King is due to appear at Chelmsford Crown Court tomorrow.

  10. Stolen medal awarded for 'extreme act of bravery'

    A British Empire Medal stolen from a home in Waltham Abbey on Christmas Day was awarded to the victim's father for an "extreme act of bravery", police say.

    An elderly couple returned home to Rosebank after visiting family to find burglars had raided their house.

    Det Con Leon Rossi from Essex Police said the medal was presented after the former munitions factory employee "saved a workman's life in 1955".

  11. Police search pair after debris 'deliberately' left in roads

    Police want to speak to two people after concrete blocks, wood and barbed wire were found "deliberately" placed in roads in Tiptree.

    Nine separate incidents have been reported to Essex Police since 20 December. Damage totalling thousands of pounds has been caused to vehicles.

    The force are trying to trace a white man, aged 20 to 30, seen wearing camouflage trousers and an orange and grey top, and a woman, also 20 to 30, wearing grey and black clothing.

    The family of a missing teenager say they are concerned for his welfare.

    Tyrese Nyakunengwahe, 14, was last seen at 15:50 on Sunday. There was a reported sighting of him in Basildon town centre yesterday afternoon, police say.

    Tyrese is described as 5ft 1in (1.54m) tall, slim, with black hair that is short on the sides and longer on top.

  13. Ram-raiders steal cash machine

    Ram-raiders have stolen a cash machine from a post office in Great Totham.

  14. Travel: Lane blocked on M25 clockwise

    One lane is blocked on the M25 clockwise between J30 for Lakeside and J31 for West Thurrock because of a broken-down lorry.

  15. Resident speaks of worry following Pitsea murder

    A resident of Appleford Court in Pitsea, where a man died in a stairwell early this morning, has described the moment he returned home to find "police cars everywhere". 


    A 50-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder. Essex Police is also searching for a second suspect following the incident.  

    The resident (pictured), who wanted to be known only as Nick, said: "There was police warning tape all over my front door down to the lamp post... It was quite worrying."

  16. Hotel death woman's family: 'Our future has been stolen'

    The family of a Essex woman found dead in a Hertfordshire hotel on Christmas Eve have said they are "distraught" and "totally devastated".

    Katie Locke, 23, from Buckhurst Hill, was found at Theobalds Park Hotel in Waltham Cross. In a statement, her family said: “We now feel like our future has been stolen from us."

    Carl Langdell, 26, of Roundmoor Drive, Waltham Cross, has been remanded in custody accused of murder.
