Free parking for carers in trial scheme

BBC News Online
Carers who travel to look after people will be able to park for free on single or double yellow lines under a new trial scheme being launched by Cornwall Council.
The council said around 130 Care Quality Commission accredited care organisations can apply for the Health Care Permit on behalf of the 4,000 carers they employ.
Cornwall Council cabinet portfolio holder for transport Geoff Brown said: “Carers have told us that being able to find a parking space close to the home of those they care for is sometimes a real issue for them.
"As they search for somewhere to legally park on the road, the time they have to spend with the person they are visiting is being eaten into.
"This new trial means that they can apply for a permit which will let them park on street for a limited time, even where there are single or double yellow lines.”

Home Affairs overspend due to 'non-recurrent Brexit costs'
John Fernandez
BBC Radio Guernsey
BBCCopyright: BBC
Guernsey's Home Affairs Committee says Brexit is one of the main reasons behind an overspend in its budget.
Policy and Resources say the committee has spent £700,000 more than it should have last year.
The announcement of the overspend came last month, but it's taken another month for Home to explain why it occurred.
In a statement, Committee for Home Affairs President, Mary Lowe said the overspend was as a result of some "unforeseen changes which emerged in December".
She added that one of the reasons behind the committee breaching its budget is a non-recurrent cost in relation to Brexit and the money being spent now will be saved in the future.
An investigation by Policy and Resources is under way to look at why the overspend came at such short notice.

Wollaston's Independent Group to become political party
Miles Davis
BBC News Online
The Independent Group set up by MPs who defected from Labour and the
Conservatives has applied to register as a political party in order to be able
to fight European elections if they take place this year.
Totnes MP Sarah Wollaston was one of those who left the Conservatives to join the independent Group.
The group will stand under the party label Change UK - The Independent Group if
polls are held on May 23.
Former Conservative Heidi Allen has been selected as interim leader of the new
party.
The UK will have to stage elections to the European Parliament as a condition
of any further delay to Brexit.
Defeat for Prime Minister Theresa May in a vote on her Withdrawal Agreement in
the House of Commons would greatly increase the likelihood of an
application on April 12 for a long extension to the Brexit process.
In order to stand candidates in the European polls, conducted on a regional
proportional representation system, any group must be registered as a political
party with the European Commission.
