The skipper of a pleasure boat on the Isles of Scilly has been praised for pulling a man from the water after a boat with four people on board got swamped in dangerous conditions off Tresco on Sunday.
St Mary's lifeboat said the casualties, who were all airlifted to hospital in Truro, were lucky to be alive after being washed on to rocks and hit by their vessel in a channel where the tide was running fast.
Skippering the Osprey close by, Andy Howell was taking a group wildlife watching. His passengers helped spot the casualty in the water.
He said: "I saw this massive great wave coming up, he was right in it and went shooting off down the face of it – like a big surfing wave – and heading straight into the shoreline. We saw two people up on the rocks ... we went in a bit closer, we had to be careful obviously; spotted a third, and then spotted somebody else in the water shouting 'help', saying he was 'going to sleep', and I thought we’ve got to go and get him.”
