  1. Devon schools recruit teachers from abroad

    A shortage of teachers has led some schools in Devon to recruit from America, Canada, South Africa and Ireland.

    The Academies Enterprise Trust says the number of vacant teaching posts in the county rose by 2.5% last year with the largest number of vacancies in Science, English and Maths.

    But, the Department for Education said there were more teachers in our schools than ever before.

    Police are considering the move to improve community safety and reduce the number of assaults on officers. They already carry pepper spray and a baton to protect themselves.

    Tasers are seen by the police as an effective alternative.

  5. High radiation dose given to baby not reported

    A radiographer who gave a baby too high a dose of radiation at the Royal Cornwall Hospital did not report the error, it has emerged.

    The baby was undergoing an X-ray of all the major bones in the body - used when doctors suspect a child might have been hurt deliberately - when the mistake was made in November last year.

    It took two days for the error to be picked up by a different radiographer, who reported it to the chief executive of the trust and the Care Quality Commission. The hospital is describing it as a serious incident.

    • The A3022 Avenue Road in Torquay is partially blocked and there's slow traffic inbound near the Old Mill Road junction because of an accident
    • At Carland Cross on the A30 westbound traffic is busy but moving due to a broken down vehicle just before the A39
    • In Helston the B3304 is closed due to roadworks near Ratcliffes Lane
    • The North Devon Link Road is closed in both directions between the Bolham roundabout and South Molton due to roadworks. Diversions are in place and it will reopen between 16:00 and 19:00 this evening, before closing again until midnight
    • Expect delays at Greenbottom between Threemilestone and Chacewater, where the road is closed over the railway for bridge repair work
  7. Seriously ill children 'didn't get the care needed', review says

    Seriously ill children didn't get the care they needed according to a review into heart services at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, which also treats infants from Devon, Cornwall and Somerset.

    The report published today says the number of staff fell below recommended levels, and there was a breakdown in communication with parents.

  9. Man rescued after getting stuck in mud

    A man's been rescued from the river in Truro after refusing to leave the muddy water.

    Members of the public alerted the emergency services that a man was in the River Truro at around 20:30 last night.

    Fire and police officers on the scene say he refused to comply with requests to get out and then got stuck in the mud.

  10. Baby 'given too high dose of radiation'

    It has been revealed a baby was given a too high dose of radiation during an X-ray at the Royal Cornwall Hospital.  

    The error, which happened in November, prompted a serious incident investigation at the trust. 

    It revealed the radiographer performing the X-ray didn't have adequate training and was unfamiliar with exposure levels for children on the X-ray machine. An action plan has since been implemented.
