    Amy Orton

    Local Democracy Reporter

Benefit changes and high private-sector rents are being blamed for a rise in the number of people worried they might lose their home in Leicester.

An increase in demand has led to the city council taking on extra staff to deal with the issue.

    customer service centre

Five new members will join the authority's homeless prevention team based at the customer service centre on Granby Street.

They will join 13 existing staff that are already providing advice on benefits available to people, help with budgeting or dealing with debts and supporting people in speaking to their landlord or dealing with eviction notices.

It is estimated that nearly 5,000 city households will ask for help in the 2018/19 financial year.

  16. Takeaway fly-tippers given suspended jail sentences

    Amy Woodfield

    BBC News

Two men have been given suspended jail sentences for fly-tipping after a huge amount of takeaway food waste was dumped in rural areas of Derbyshire.

    Rubbish

Waheed Hussain (left), the owner of Sarry's fast food in Derby, paid Wahid Hamid (right) to dispose of his rubbish but instead of taking it to the official waste centre it was dumped in country lanes around Findern, Littleover and Mickleover.

Under the law, it was Hussain's responsibility to ensure his waste was disposed of legally.

South Derbyshire District Council eventually set up cameras and caught Hamid in the act.

    Waheed Hussain and Wahid Hamid

The men admitted leaving at least 139 bin bags over eight months but council officials estimate it could have been three times that.

Hussain and Hamid were both given a six-and-a-half month suspended jail sentence and told to pay £3,000 in court costs and ordered to carry out 150 hours of community work - that might include litter picking.
