Park gets solar-powered defibrillator

A park in Leicester is among the first in the country to have had a solar-powered defibrillator installed in it.

The unit, which is the first of its kind in the city, has been put up at Bennion Pools nature area in Beaumont Leys.
Deputy city mayor, Piara Singh Clair (pictured fourth left), said: "This is a trial project but if successful, we will order more of these solar-powered units.
"Bennion Pools is the perfect place to try this out because it’s well used but doesn’t have any nearby buildings with a power supply."
The council has already installed 28 defibrillators at its parks and open spaces and it has plans to install six more before April.
Storm fells trees across Leicestershire

Highways teams have been out across Leicestershire clearing trees that have fallen because of Storm Eleanor.

Fallen trees have been removed in Great Glen, Market Harborough, Swithland, Houghton on the Hill, Loughborough and Ullesthorpe.
A yellow warning for wind remains in place for the East Midlands until 19:00.
Storm Eleanor has been slowly working its way eastwards across the region but gusts have not been as powerful as those seen on Tuesday.
Anna Read has already had her operation cancelled twice before this latest situation and fears it may happen a third time.

He shared his enthusiasm and interest in local politics in a self-published book in 2014, "The Leicestershire Story: People, Power and Politics in an English County", but otherwise was a private person.
He suffered a short illness and his successor as leader of Blaby District, Terry Richardson, has said he'll be missed by people from all parties, across the district and county.

The man who replaced Ernie White as leader of Blaby District Council has paid tribute to the long-serving councillor following his death.
Terry Richardson said Mr White had been "hugely respected across the political spectrum" and was "truly dedicated to making Blaby a better place".
An 86-year-old woman who was injured in a crash on the M1 at the weekend has died in hospital.
Derbyshire Police said Elizabeth Harrison, from Barnsley, was a rear seat passenger in a Nissan Qashqai that crashed on the southbound carriageway between Chesterfield and Alfreton on Saturday afternoon.
A 90-year-old passenger from the same car remains in a critical condition.

Van fire damages crops in Nottinghamshire field

Crops were damaged when a stolen van caught fire after being driven into a field in Nottinghamshire.
Police said the vehicle was taken from the Lincolnshire area at some point between 29 and 31 December and was found dumped on land between the villages of South Scarle, Besthorpe and Collingham on New Year's Eve.
The disorder happened in Lincoln's High Street at about 16:30 on 7 October.
PC Allan Guy, from Derbyshire Police's football unit, said: "With
this occurring on a busy street, causing distress to a number of innocent passers-by
- and bearing in mind the level of violence used - this incident is now a big
priority."

Ex-rugby player and fundraiser hit by 'serious illness'

Former Leicester Tigers prop Matt Hampson is recovering in hospital after a serious illness over Christmas.
In 2005, he was was left paralysed from the neck down after an accident in training and has since raised more than £1m for charity through his foundation.
Roy Jackson, from the Matt Hampson Foundation, told BBC Radio Leicester: "Matt has had pancreatitis, which I believe is a very serious illness.
"Matt's problem is he doesn't feel any pain...but he is getting there, they are dealing with and sorting out his illness.
"At the same time they are having to deal with his respiratory problems because he is on a ventilator."
