RSPCA launches appeal after 'man kicks rabbits'

Khia Lewis-Todd

BBC Local Live

An investigation has been launched after a man was apparently seen kicking a rabbit into the road.

The RSPCA was called to Common Road, in Swadlincote, on Wednesday night after receiving a call from a woman who had reportedly seen a man attack two rabbits. The pair were later discovered inside wheelie bins.

One of the rabbits suffered two broken teeth - but neither of the bunnies were seriously injured.

A spokesman for the RSPCA said “If anyone recognises the bunnies or knows someone who has lost a pair then we’d urge them to get in touch.

"We’re also appealing to anyone who saw the man attack the rabbits on Wednesday to contact our appeal line on 0300 123 8018 as they may be able to help with our investigation.”

Football fan gets rude Rams player tattoo

Khia Lewis-Todd

BBC Local Live

A Scottish football fan has a new tattoo on his, er... bottom. And it's no ordinary tattoo.

Callum Strang tweeted he would get a tattoo of the popular Coldplay song 'Viva la Vida' if Derby County player Chris Martin scored for Scotland against Slovenia at the weekend.

And would you believe it - Martin scored the winning goal.

The 22-year-old said his friends wouldn't let him forget about the tweet - so he kept his word and now he's rather pleased with how it's turned out.

"At first my mum hated it and she nearly kicked me out, my work colleagues started taking the mickey they thought it was hilarious.

"I've not been kicked out. I'm still currently in the house," he told BBC Radio Derby.

Arrested charity boss faces cash questions

Concerns have been raised that a charity boss may not have accounted for thousands of pounds intended for children with cancer.

Mike Hyman

Kids 'n' Cancer's assets were frozen last month after Mike Hyman was arrested on suspicion of theft.

The BBC has learned of claims he made a withdrawal of £5,000 to help two Leicestershire families but they deny receiving the money.

Mr Hyman denied wrongdoing and said he could not comment while on police bail.

Derby City Council marks 20th birthday

Sally Swinfen

BBC Radio Derby newsreader

Derby City Council is celebrating its 20th birthday this weekend.

It became a unitary authority in April 1997, meaning services like education and highways came back under the control of the city council.

The Managing Director of Marketing Derby, John Forkin, said making Derby a unitary authority was a pivotal change.

Derby City Council

"That was quite an important moment because it meant all the services in the city came under the one umbrella.

"A lot of the work we are involved in today, I think the genesis of that started back then - the regeneration of the city."

Khia Lewis-Todd

Alan Dowell led yesterday's search in the popular dog walking park, and told Radio Derby: "We have colleagues at the Environment Agency doing water tests on the samples they took away. As soon as we know the results we will let that be known.

"The car park is remaining closed at the moment but people are still welcome to walk at Poppy Wood."

Jailed former Rams player wants more help for youngsters

Khia Lewis-Todd

BBC Local Live

A former Derby County footballer who spent time in prison for fraud  says youngsters in the game need more support.

After being released by the Rams, Medi Abalimba stole credit card details and posed as a Chelsea star to maintain his lavish lifestyle.

He was jailed in 2014 for the £163,000 fraud.

Mr Abalimba, who was released from prison last month and now plays for Mickleover Sports, says pressure and lack of guidance ruined him.

"When you're young, you work so hard to be a part of the first team. It's not about the money - you want to play. A lot of personal things happened.

"I just let the frustration get the better of me and I wanted to play for Derby, that was the most important thing for me at the time because I was working so hard for it.

"And when it didn't go my way I let myself down," he said.
