Severn Trent warning after burglaries

Water company Severn Trent has issued a warning to its customers after reports of burglaries in Ripley and Ilkeston after individuals entered homes - saying they were from "The Water Board" and there to check the water supply.

Customers can check Severn Trent workers are "legitimate" by ringing 0345 604 1655. A spokeswoman for the firm also said all workers will be carrying identity cards.

Have your say on quarry plans

Derbyshire County Council is urging residents to give their views on an area of land in Darley Dale which could be used for quarrying in the future. 

Mineral companies have suggested a number of sites they wish to be included in the Minerals Local Plan - currently being drawn up by the county council and Derby City Council - including land in Bent Lane.

People can find out more about the plans by attending a drop-in session at The Whitworth Centre in Darley Dale tomorrow from 09:00 to 19:00.

The owner of a horse, which had to be rescued after getting stuck in a bog in the Staffordshire Moorlands this morning, says the animal is cold and shaken but "doing OK". 

Three crews were sent by Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service to a field off Wickenlow Lane near Flash to help lift the 20-year-old horse, Angel, out.

Worker 'hit with wooden stick' in robbery

Two men attacked a 49-year-old shop worker with "some sort of wooden stick" during a robbery at an off-licence in Langley Mill, Derbyshire Police said.

At 20:20 last night, the men went into Aldercar Express and approached the man behind the till. The worker was hit before cash was taken from the till and beer was stolen from the shelves. 

The men, who were wearing hooded tops, then left. The victim suffered bruising to his head but did not require medical treatment.

Horse rescued after getting stuck in ditch

A horse has been rescued after getting stuck in a ditch in the Staffordshire Moorlands this morning. 

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service say they sent three crews to a field on Wickenlow Lane near Flash and arrived at 09:45.

The service say the horse, which weighs a tonne and is 17 hands high, was lifted from the ditch and was checked over by a vet.

A portrait by renowned artist Joseph Wright has been discovered in a Belper townhouse.

Charles Hanson, of Hansons Auctioneers, found the oil painting on a routine home visit. 

The work, believed to have been painted in about 1783, shows a Spondon gentleman titled as John Dawes Mather. It is expected to fetch £2,000 to £3,000 at auction in March.

One in five new school places in Derby is in a school Ofsted says is not up to standard, according to new research.  

Thieves burgled house and stole cars

Two cars have been stolen from a driveway after a burglary at a house in Woodville.

Derbyshire Police said the offenders broke in through a rear door at a house in Meakin Drive and stole two sets of car keys. They then drove off in a Honda Civic Type R and a Nissan GT-R.

Police want to hear from anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the area between 23:30 on Sunday and 06:00 on Monday.

The trial of a man accused of murdering a 74-year-old man found dead near a Sikh temple continues today.

Sukhraj Singh Atwal, 29, has gone on trial for the murder of Satnam Singh - the father of his mother's ex-husband - in Derby in July 2015.  

It is alleged Mr Singh Atwal repeatedly stamped and jumped on Mr Singh.

The black Volkswagen van - parked on Birchwood Crescent - was targeted sometime between Saturday and Sunday.

Derbyshire Police and Crime Commissioner Hardyal Dhindsa has attended a session on rural crime in Belper to see 12 frontline officers increase their knowledge and skills in handling issues such as livestock, machinery theft and wildlife crime.

The force is launching a new rural crime unit in the spring and is expected to have a total of 27 police officers involved.

SAFE - which helps people leaving care or facing complex family problems - was in danger of losing cash from Derbyshire County Council.

The Environment Agency will continue to monitor and clean the River Wye in Bakewell after an oil spill.

Two bikes stolen from enthusiast

A riding enthusiast has been left "gutted" after two bikes were stolen from a unit in Melbourne.

An orange KTM 300 EXC and a blue and white Suzuki DR Z400 were stolen from the unit at Castle Lane Industrial Estate between 17:00 on Thursday and 11:00 on Friday. 

The Suzuki owner, Tim Thompson, a member of the Trail Riders Fellowship (TRF), said he has spent the last three-and-a-half years modifying the bike to suit his riding and is appealing for the public's help in tracing those responsible for the thefts.
