Exhibition opens for boxing legend Jack Bodell

The life and times of Derbyshire sporting hero Jack Bodell are being celebrated in Swadlincote from today. 

The former British and European heavyweight champion boxer died in November at the aged 76.

His family, along with South Derbyshire District Council, have put an exhibition together at Sharpe's Pottery in the town.

Man charged with manslaughter of Derby dad

A man has been charged with manslaughter following an assault on a Derby dad during a night out.

Oliver Falivena suffered head injuries when he was attacked during an altercation in Derby Market Place, on 29 August.

The 22-year-old, from Derby, died in hospital in Nottingham a week later.

Richard Last, 31, of Bridgeside Way, Spondon, will appear at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court on 10 February.

Tunisian attack inquests begin

An inquest has heard that a gunman who shot and killed 30 British tourists on a beach in Tunisia in 2015, could have been stopped sooner. 

Islamist gunman Seifeddine Rezgui opened fire near Sousse in June 2015, killing a total of 38 people including Scott Chalkley from Chaddesden

The inquests are expected to take seven weeks.

Evans signs new Chesterfield deal

Chesterfield striker Ched Evans has signed a 12-month contract extension with the League One club.

In October Evans was found not guilty, following a retrial, of raping a 19-year-old woman in a hotel room in 2011.

Moorways - home of City of Derby Swimming Club - is set to close by the end of January.

Our Facebook has attracted some strong comments.

Val Woods said: "I am absolutely disgusted when this council seems to spend money on things that don't matter."  

Rachel Cavey wrote: "I think it's terrible !!!"

Jane Knape added: "At this rate we shall be a " Ghost Town " Perhaps we should all axe our council tax payments !"

Two more years funding for ice rink

Derby's ice rink attracted more than 16,000 skaters this winter. One thousand more than last year. 

The temporary attraction has been set up every December for the last seven years and there's funding in place to keep it going for another two.

That gives you enough notice to get practicing for Christmas 2017!

Ex-football coach denies sex assault charges

Former football coach Barry Bennell has denied eight charges of child sex offences - some of which are alleged to have happened in Derbyshire. 

The 63-year-old, who worked at Crewe Alexandra and other clubs, appeared via video link at Chester Crown Court.

Plea to 'stay away' from A&E unless an emergency

School strikes everyday this week

It's the first day of a series of strikes by school support staff in Derby as part of their long running fair pay dispute with the city council.

They're taking industrial action every day this week, between 07:00 and 13:00.

Stuck on the A38?... so was our reporter

Our reporter Alex Blakemore was on the A38 north towards Derby and was stuck in traffic for nearly an hour.

One ambulance was seen driving down the dual carriageway with sirens on and traffic continued to crawl down the road. 

It cleared just after 10:20.

Jack Bodell exhibition opens today

Sharpes Museum pays homage to Derbyshire's Jack Bodell.

Jack won the British Heavy Weight Championship in 1969 and won 58 fights including 31 knockouts.

Swimming club may move out of Derbyshire

The swimming club where Olympic gold medalists have trained may have to move out of Derbyshire to find a pool.

Baggy Shanker the Chairman of The City of Derby Swimming Club said: "Temporarily between now and June they are looking at other facilities to make sure they have enough demand.”

Derby's double gold medallist Ross Davenport took to Twitter after hearing about the closure of Moorways to express his feelings.

The competitive swimmer won two gold medals in the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

Iraqi family given last-minute reprieve

The Royal School for the Deaf in Derby is helping an Iraqi family facing deportation prepare its case to be allowed to stay. 

The Home Office believes the Hamadamin family should have applied for asylum in Germany. 

Lawand's family said they moved to Derby via Germany so he could learn sign language.

However the Home Office argues EU rules state refugees should register in the first European country they enter.

Health and safety issues at Moorways

Moorways, which was built more than 40 years ago, has struggled with maintenance and health and safety issues.

Its loss was made more acute by the ongoing closure of the main pool at nearby Queen's Leisure Centre, due to structural problems.

Some sad news for swimming fans in Derby as the council's swimming pool Moorways, will close by the end of January.

The City of Derby Swimming Club has trained Olympic gold medalists Adam Peaty and Ross Davenport at the pool.

Unfortunately the city council said the building is too expensive to run and the closure will save about £350,000 a year.
