What is a raccoon dog?

Khia Lewis-Todd

BBC Local Live

If you, like me, had to look up what a raccoon dog is, here's what I learned:

  • They are part of the same family as domestic dogs and foxes and are native to east Asia
  • They are generally forest-dwelling animals and are most active at night
  • They are one of the fastest breeding members of the canine family

Trapped raccoon dog 'clearly in pain'

Khia Lewis-Todd

BBC Local Live

RSPCA Animal Welfare Officer David Hatton said: “I was expecting to see a badger, but what I found instead was a raccoon dog, clearly in pain and covered in ticks.

"I managed to catch her safely and transport her for veterinary treatment."

“The vet believed that the poor animal could have had the trap on her for a few days and that she may have been out in the wild for quite some time."

A raccoon dog was found with its leg caught in a trap in Moorfield, Glossop.

Poultry owner takes action against avian flu

Nigel Cash

BBC Radio Derby reporter

Gill Hurst has 40 hens at her barn on a small holding near Ambergate and told us about how she intends to take action against the spread of avian flu.

"Because it is spread by excretion and other birds, if you walked on somewhere where there's been an infected bird, you walk it into my birds.

"So I have a disinfectant pad outside as you walk in and as you walk out."

Bird owners are under orders from DEFRA to keep all poultry indoors.

Khia Lewis-Todd

BBC Local Live

The officer in charge of armed police in the county said he stands by his decision not to deploy armed officers in public places over the festive period.

Assistant Chief Constable Chris Haward said: "If I deploy my officers on foot, the time to respond to a situation that we weren't expecting increases.

"So I wanted them to remain mobile, reactive and able to respond as quickly as we possibly could."

Derbyshire was the only East Midlands force to not put armed police on patrol in public places.
