A windy day on Tuesday - variable cloud at first with a few brighter spells however turning increasingly dull, cloudy and drizzly with a few light showers later in the afternoon.

Man in court over Derbyshire car crime

Police have charged a man in connection with a series of car crimes across Derbyshire.

The 22-year-old from Sheffield has been charged following a number of thefts from cars in the Ilkeston, Dronfield, Eastwood and Calver areas.

He is due to appear at South Derbyshire Magistrates' Court tomorrow.

BreakingTesco to cut 1,000 jobs

Tesco says 1,000 people are to be made redundant as part of a shake-up of its distribution network.

It involves the closure of the Chesterfield distribution centre and another one in Welham Green, Hertfordshire.

Uber 'just another competitor'

The owner of a taxi firm in Derby said he's not worried about the competition from Uber taxis.

Uber has been given permission to operate in Derby city. 

Rafiq Yasin, who runs 7-5 taxis, said: "Uber is just another competitor and local firms will always have the upper hand when it comes to giving personal service."

Travel: M1 northbound lanes reopened

There is queuing traffic on the M1 northbound between Tibshelf Services and J29, A617 (Chesterfield) due to an accident earlier. All lanes have been reopened. 

Facebook: 'Fly-tipping on the increase'


Earlier on today we told you about Derbyshire County Council proposals to charge residents for throwing away certain materials at their tips. 

On Facebook, there's been a mixed reception to the plans. 

Carroll Eyre said: "Oh dear there will be no laybys as the fly tipping will become a health and safety issue what a stupid thing to do you already collect council tax for our rubbish."

Phil Butt also said "Great way to encourage fly tipping."

Derby County Ladies to host Forest

Would-be distraction burglar fled after challenge

Police have issued a warning after a man walked into a house in Long Eaton claiming he was there to check the meter.

After being challenged, however, the man turned and left. The incident took place between 13:00 and 14:00 on Thursday.

The man has been described as white, aged about 55, of medium build and about 6ft tall. He had short, curly grey hair, was clean shaven, and was described as having "yellowed front teeth".

Derby County will find out later who they will face in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

The draw takes place live on BBC Two at about 19:00.

The Rams booked their place in the next round after a superb 2-1 win over Premier League outfit West Brom on Saturday.

Cycling 'changed man's life'

A Derbyshire man has changed his life completely - after deciding to give up his car and make a bike his main source of transport.

John Hughes (right), from Ilkeston, ditched his car more than two years ago and said it was the best thing he has ever done.

He thinks his family save about £4,000 to £5,000 a year as a direct result.

Derby worker pleads guilty to fraud

A woman who worked for a magazine company in Derby has pleaded guilty to two counts of fraud.

Barbara Stone admitted the two charges at Nottingham Crown Court this morning.

Her hearing has been adjourned.

Woman suffered 'significant head injury'

The woman who was found injured at the house in Spondon suffered a significant head injury, a Derbyshire Police spokesman added.

A man has been arrested after a woman was found injured at a house in Spondon.

Police were called to Avondale Road at about 02:45 on Saturday.

The man, aged 56, and woman, aged 59, were both taken to hospital for treatment. The man has now been discharged from hospital and is in police custody.

The woman remains in hospital in a serious condition.

Home Office to make decision on deaf Iraqi boy

The Home Office will decide today whether to deport a deaf Iraqi boy living in Derby. 

Lawand Hamadamin, who is six years old, fled Iraq with his family. 

Having arrived in Germany, they then came to Derby so Lawand could attend the city's Royal School for the Deaf. 

The Home Office said refugees should claim asylum in the first safe country they arrive in.

Charges may go ahead for tip usage

You could be charged to dump items at Derbyshire rubbish tips from April. 

The council's planning to charge people to take non-household waste to its tips, including items like tiles, building rubble and soil. 

Other counties like Leicestershire already charge.

Licence granted for Uber

The taxi app Uber has been granted a licence to operate in Derby.

It's designed to allow people to book transport quickly and without the need to hand over cash to the driver as payments can be done online.

The firm hasn't confirmed when the app will start working in the city.
