Calling for a change in law to protect police dogs

Khia Lewis-Todd

BBC Local Live

Matthew Ellis, Police and Crime Commissioner for Staffordshire, is calling for a change in the law to help protect police dogs in the line of duty.

Assaults on police dogs are viewed in law in the same way as causing damage to property.

Mr Ellis said: "If you hurt or even kill a police dog it is seen as damage to property – the equivalent to kicking a car panel."

Matthew's aim is to strengthen the law in this area, and to make it an aggravated or even custodial offence.

Lighting festival dropped 'due to government cuts'

Khia Lewis-Todd

BBC Local Live

The decision by Derby City Council not to fund Diwali lights this year has left members of the Hindu community "saddened".

The council had this to say on the matter: "Regrettably there will be no Diwali lights this year.

"The lighting festival had to be dropped as part of savings which were approved by Council Cabinet for the 2016/17 financial year due to government cuts.

"We would be happy to work with local businesses to find alternative sources of funding for future years."
