  6. Analysis: Shareholders and unions 'baying for Sports Direct blood'

    Dominic O'Connell

Business Presenter, BBC Radio 4 Today programme

In football, like most sports, timing is everything. Mike Ashley, the billionaire owner of Newcastle United and controlling shareholder of Sports Direct, knows this all too well.

The release today of the independent review comes just a day before he faces irate shareholders at the annual general meeting.

They, and trade unions, are baying for blood, and while the report may not mollify them, it changes the nature of the headlines the day before the showdown.

The investigation is surprisingly hard on the company. Many had predicted a whitewash, as the law firm involved, Reynold Porter Chamberlain, does other work for Sports Direct.

    Calum McKenzie

    BBC Local Live

Donington Live (the replacement for the Darley Park event) returning in 2017 has certainly got you all talking over on the BBC Radio Derby Facebook page.

Sarah Millward-sheehan writes: "That was a tradition that saw 35,000 people come to Darley park every year.

"Why couldn't they put a charge of £1 per person and keep it in Derby instead of giving to Donington Park."

  16. Falcons stint 'helped earn test recall'

    Calum McKenzie

    BBC Local Live

New Zealand's selectors have hinted that Jimmy Neesham's time at Derbyshire may have played a part in his test recall following a back injury.

"Jimmy has put in a lot of work to make sure he is physically ready for a return to test cricket,'' selector Gavin Larsen said.

  17. 'Concern' remains about warehouse, union says

    Calum McKenzie

    BBC Local Live

Unite assistant general secretary Steve Turner said that, while the report into Sports Direct represents progress, the union still wants the retailer to go further.

"Unite still has concerns over the use of the two employment agencies - The Best Connection and Transline, which supply over 3,400 workers to the Sports Direct Shirebrook warehouse," he said.

"For Unite it has been their behaviour and the lack of oversight that has been the cause of so many of the abuses at Shirebrook."
