  6. Man punched dog after throwing it into air

    A man from Derbyshire who threw his dog into the air and punched it has been fined and banned from keeping dogs for three years.

    Police officers arrested 31-year-old Christopher Britt on Bath Street, Ilkeston, on 11 March, and seized the Staffordshire bull terrier he'd been attacking.

    More criticism for East Midlands Ambulance Service today after a Care Quality Commission inspection revealed it doesn't have enough ambulances or front-line staff to provide a safe service.

  10. Park ranger injured during moorland fire

    A park ranger was injured when a 4x4 vehicle overturned during the emergency operation to put out a moorland fire near Ladybower reservoir.

    He was taken to hospital in Sheffield. Firefighters returned to the scene today and Bob Curry from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue said a helicopter would be used to drop water on any remaining hot spots.

  11. Prison Service to 'learn' from death in custody

    The Prison Service said in a statement: "We make every effort to learn from each death in custody and our thoughts are with the family of Shalane Blackwood.

    "We will consider and respond to the findings of the coroner's inquest and see what lessons can be learned."

    The mother of Shalane Blackwood says the 29 year old complained of stomach pains and told her he was dying when she last spoke to him on 21 July.

    She said: "I knew something was wrong when he was in HMP Nottingham. I just wish my concerns had been listened to at the time when I raised them. I feel Shalane's death could have been prevented."

  15. 'Neglect' contributed to Derby prisoner's death

    A mother whose ill son died at HMP Nottingham after being neglected by staff says he should not have been left to die.

    Shalane Blackwood complained of stomach pains and told his mother Linda Blackwood he was dying when she last spoke to him on 21 July.

    He was found dead in his cell on 5 August, having suffered internal bleeding due to an ulcer.

    An inquest jury decided "systematic failings amounting to neglect" significantly contributed to his death.

    Detectives investigating a sexual assault in the Bolsover area have issued an e-fit of a boy as he would have looked in the 1970s.

    They say he would have been aged between seven and 13 at the time and may have witnessed the attack.
