    Chesterfield Borough Council is spending £15,000 on a consultation to come up with a new layout for the town's open-air market.

    It said the study would look into increasing the number of stalls in a prominent position, putting in more power points and increasing aisle space.

    Derby County's Craig Bryson (pictured) will have a late fitness test ahead of tonight's home game against Leeds after missing the Boxing Day win against Birmingham with a calf injury.

  5. Hate crime in the snow

    An investigation has begun after a racially offensive word and a Swastika were written in snow on the bonnet of a car in New Mills.

    Police said they were treating the incident, which happened on Church Street overnight between 26 and 27 December, as a hate crime after a resident said they were extremely upset at what was written.

    Tributes have been paid following the death of one of the first Americans to play professional basketball in Derby.

    Clarence Wiggins came to the city in 1983 and subsequently took up a teaching post at Noel Baker School, while continuing to play and coach. He died yesterday of a suspected heart attack.

  8. Bin backlog

    Erewash Borough Council has published a list of all the streets its refuse collection teams were able to pick up from today and yesterday due to the wintry conditions.

    It said the teams would aim to collect missed bins on Friday instead.

  16. 'Space' diamond found

    A £12,000 diamond launched into space from Derbyshire this summer as part of a publicity stunt has been found.

    The jewel, which was projected 100,000 feet into the air by an online retailer, was discovered in a hedgerow in Brattleby, Lincolnshire, by 75-year-old Allan Bell, who now gets to keep it.

    The council says gritting requests will be dealt with in order of where need is greatest.

    Police said a teenager received a stab wound during a fight in Normanton yesterday evening.

    A 20-year-old suffered minor injuries and a shop window was broken during the disturbance on Normanton Road at about 18:50.

    Peverel Retirement, which owns Chatsworth Court in Ashbourne, has apologised after residents at the sheltered housing complex were left without a lift for 11 days over Christmas.

    It said repairs were delayed when a replacement part due to be delivered by City Link never arrived due to the collapse of the company.

    Residents in a sheltered home in Derbyshire have complained they were left isolated over Christmas when their lift stopped working.

    The lift at Ashbourne's Chatsworth Court was out of action for 11 days - including Christmas Day - leaving several disabled residents stranded.
