There'll be a widespread frost with temperatures down to -2C (28F) in built-up areas but in rural spots they could drop to -5C (23F), especially where there's still snow on the ground.

Cold snap to continue

The Met Office says a cold weather alert for the Midlands

will stay in place until 12:00 on Wednesday.

The alert level is one below a national emergency and indicates social and healthcare services should target "high-risk" groups, such as the very young or old, or those with chronic diseases.

Teenager hurt in fall

A 14-year-old boy broke both legs and several ribs when he fell 7m (23ft) at Stanage Edge yesterday afternoon.

Fugitive returns

A convicted robber who went on the run from an open prison in Lincolnshire

has handed himself in at a police station in Chesterfield.

Sean Sisson, 27, was serving a seven-year sentence for robbery and arson when he absconded from North Sea Camp near Boston on 22 December.

Car spins off A38 at Burton
