A Swadlincote spa owner has been fined £2,500 after

four teenagers caught a bacterial infection during a birthday visit.

Derbyshire Police's Chief Constable Mick Creedon says he is "very concerned" patients are regularly having to be taken to hospital by officers because of a shortage of available ambulances.

He says: "We're not qualified medically. My officers are going to incidents that require an ambulance service, not a police service.

"We'll often be at the scene of a road traffic collision or a serious injury, where you need an ambulance service there and then, but there simply isn't one available."

The owner of a Swadlincote beauty salon has been fined £2,500 after six girls fell ill after using a bacteria-infested spa pool, says South Derbyshire District Council.

Four of the girls complained of earache and all reported an itchy, painful rash all over their bodies following a birthday pampering party at Kensington Salon and Spa, in Midland Road, in May 2013.

The salon's owner admitted a number of safety charges following a district council investigation and was ordered to close until all problems had been addressed.
