  6. Health boss urges people to use NHS Test and Trace app

Cumbria's director of public health says the more people who use the NHS Test and Trace app, the more powerful it will become in helping to stop the spread of coronavirus.

The app became available to download in England and Wales yesterday.

It's designed to alert users that they may have been close to someone infected with Covid-19.

But it's more complex for people who travel between Cumbria and Scotland.

Colin Cox says those people who frequently cross the border will need to download the Protect Scotland App too.

That's enough to plant and protect about two-and-a-half miles of hedge, which it's hoped will reverse a long-term decline.

  9. Keswick to Barrow challenge postponed as virus rate climbs

The Resolution Challenge between Barrow shipyard workers and a Royal Navy team which was replacing the Keswick to Barrow walk this year has been postponed until next May.

The event was already a replacement for the K2B walk, which normally involves thousands of people, because of the coronavirus pandemic.

But with the infection rate in Barrow now rising, organisers decided even the smaller challenge should not take place, and no full-scale walk would take place until at least this time next year.

A statement on the event's website said money would still be distributed to charities, adding: "We are so disappointed that for the first time in K2B history we've been unable to put on a walk for the year."

  13. Lower league clubs 'could be quickly out of business'

    BBC Cumbria Sport

Carlisle United head coach Chris Beech says he fears clubs lower down the league pyramid could quickly be put out of business unless fans are allowed back into stadiums, or financial aid is provided by the government.

Crowds were due to return to sports events in limited numbers next month, but Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Tuesday that this will not now go ahead.

The decision came after seven EFL clubs, including Carlisle United, piloted small crowds last Saturday.

    Chris beech
Quote Message: It's very concerning, but it is for everybody in working life... the people that own the football clubs have businesses that have also been punched hard.
Quote Message: There'll be some in better positions to us, just due to general wealth, there'll be a lot of clubs in a far worse position than us... but yes, it is a concern." from Chris Beech

The latest available figures say 105 new cases of Covid-19 were found in Cumbria in the week to 18 September, up from 82 the previous week, with 38 of them in Barrow.

Colin Cox, Cumbria's director of public health, said the figures were "going in the wrong direction".
