University honours Carlisle-born food critic Grace Dent
Grace Dent, the Carlisle-born food critic and newspaper columnist, returned to her home city this week to be given an honorary fellowship by the University of Cumbria.

Grace writes for the Evening Standard and Guardian, and appears on TV shows such as the BBC Masterchef series, and was given the fellowship for services to the media.
She told graduates in Carlisle Cathedral she had last visited the cathedral in 1978 for a school trip.

strange to be stood here 40 years later in this hat, which, is frankly ruining my hair, celebrating my achievements.”
Officials involved in Egerton Court on Barrow Island have reported falling crime rates, reduced calls to the fire and ambulance services and increased participation in mental health, alcohol and substance misuse programmes.
Landlords of the tenements are also playing a bigger role in managing problem tenants while a dedicated wellbeing hub has become a focal point of community life, a meeting of Barrow council’s executive committee was told.

Previously, Egerton Court had been tainted by a string of drug deaths, County Lines drug dealing and violent crime, including stabbings.
The officials told councillors that changes in police practice, working more closely with landlords and residents themselves, meant they were getting on top of the problems of individuals.

Police praise 'courageous' public as knifeman is jailed
Cumbria police say several members of the public deserve praise for their courage in helping catch a man who had just stabbed two strangers and injured a third in Wigton last summer.

Richard Moulton, who told police in a written statement that he had heard voices and had other health problems, was jailed for 20 years this morning after pleading guilty at Durham Crown Court to attempted murder, wounding and assault.
Afterwards, Det Sgt Tom Windridge said said that but for the work of medical staff and the air ambulance, two people could have died that day.
He said a woman who had just been injured by Moulton acted bravely, "whilst her husband acted with a calm head in calling police and providing a detailed description".
He added that Moulton had been kept in conversation by an old school friend, at risk to himself, until police could move in to make an arrest.

The football international Georgia Stanway says she could not have played in the World Cup, or won the FA Cup with Manchester City, without backing from her home town of Barrow.

Speaking before the Cumbria Sports Personality of the Year award, where she was junior winner in 2015, Georgia said she was a proud Barrovian and Cumbrian, and that her background had been "huge" in getting her to the top.

The company that owns the Robert McBride soap powder factory in Barrow says it wants to close the plant next summer, with the loss of 106 jobs.

The company says a consultation with the employees is now underway.
The company gained a new non-executive chairman, Jeffrey Nodland, an American businessman, last month.
The auctioneers, H&H, said there was interest across the country with some people bidding online for some of the 100 lots in Adam Irving's collection.
Most of the records were sold to a local record dealer and a telephone, designed after the Rolling Stones "Lips ", fetched £50.

Wigton man who stabbed two strangers jailed for 20 years
A Wigton man who stabbed two strangers and assaulted a woman in July this year has been jailed for 20 years.
Richard Moulton, 49, of Station Road in the town, had armed himself with two knives with which he attacked two men who were chatting in the street.
One was stabbed in the chest and the other in the stomach and both required surgery after suffering serious injuries.
A few minutes later, Moulton passed a woman visiting the town with her husband and lashed out, injuring her hand.
Moulton had admitted attempted murder, wounding with intent and assault and he was sentenced this morning at Durham Crown Court.
Judge James Adkin imposed a 20-year sentence with five years' extended licence, for what he called "life-threatening, entirely random
violence".
Carlisle man jailed for breaching contact ban
A Carlisle man has been jailed for 16 months after bombarding a former girlfriend with phone calls in breach of a restraining order forbidding him from contacting her.
Carlisle Crown Court was told Daniel Norman, 29, had left 96 voicemails on her phone in a single day, in one threatening to "end her life".
Norman, of Shadygrove Road, admitted putting the woman in fear of violence by harassment, breaching a restraining order and asked for a further two breaches to be taken into consideration.
In mitigation, the court heard Norman had a personality disorder and emotion control difficulties, but as well as the jail term, Judge Nicholas Barker also banned him from making contact for another 10 years.
Factory-built homes start to go up in Cumbria
Two dozen homes that have been built in a Yorkshire factory are being assembled in Cumbria.
The 26 "modular" properties in Egremont should be ready to move into next year, in the estate being built by the housing association, Home Group..

Police release name of man who died in A590 crash
Police say the man who died when a car hit a bridge parapet was Matthew Brown, 22, who came from Swarthmoor.

Mr Brown was a passenger in a Kia Ceed which collided with a bridge just after 01:00 on Wednesday on the A590 between Havethwaite and Backbarrow.
The driver, a 23-year-old woman, was taken to the Furness General Hospital.
Matthew's family described him as a devoted family man, father and step-father, who would be missed by everyone who knew him.
Train cables broken 70 times since 2014, former MP told
The former Carlisle MP, Eric Martlew, says trains on the West Coast Main Line have now been disrupted at least 70 times since April 2014.
He was given figures by Network Rail showing breakages ranged between 11 and 13 over the first four years of the period, peaked at 20 in the year ending in April 2019, and then fell back so there had only been one incident between April and August this year.
