  2. Weather: Remaining breezy overnight with blustery showers

    Blustery showers will continue during the evening, though winds will be much lighter than last night.

    Rain will stop towards dawn and skies will clear, allowing it to become quite cold by the morning.

  3. RAF Spadeadam granted freedom of Carlisle

    RAF Spadeadam has been granted the freedom of Carlisle after city councillors agreed a motion at a meeting last night.

    The air force station near Gilsland has been given the honour in recognition of historical links with the city.

    In the case of military bodies, the accolade gives them the right to march through the city on all ceremonial occasions with drums beating, bands playing, colours flying and bayonets fixed.

  4. Changes to car parking in Kendal

    Councillors in Kendal have agreed to a number of changes to car park services in the town.

    The changes include the Westmorland Shopping Centre staying open until 21:00 and South Lakeland House Car Park reducing parking charges on a Sunday.

    It's thought the changes will come in to effect on Monday. It comes as the council faces criticism for its plans to close a large free car park in the town.

  5. Westmorland Show still on tomorrow

    Organisers of the Westmorland County Show say it's definitely going ahead tomorrow, despite the rain brought by Storm Aileen overnight.

    Although the show-jumping events have had to be cancelled on safety advice, the show's chief executive has told BBC Radio Cumbria everything else is happening as planned and the trade stands are already set up on the showground near Crooklands.

    Prince Charles will visit the event tomorrow as part of his support for British agriculture and rural communities.

  6. Public meeting this evening to discuss plans for new coal mine in Whitehaven

    The second of four public meetings to discuss plans to open a new coal coal mine near Whitehaven takes place in Egremont this evening.

    More than 500 jobs could be created by West Cumbria Mining which wants to extract coking coal for the steel industry.

    The event is at the town's rugby league club at 18:00 and is being led by the independent elected Mayor of Copeland, Mike Starkie.

    Further meetings will take place in Cleator Moor and Whitehaven later this month.

  7. Woman flown to hospital after crash on A595

    A 19-year-old woman from west Cumbria has been flown to hospital in Preston after a collision on the A595 near Bootle.

    Two cars were involved in the crash which happened just after 08:00 - a Peugeot 208 and a Nissan Qashqai. The woman was a passenger in the Peugeot and her condition is described as "stable".

    The driver of the Nissan, a 28-year-old-man from west Cumbria, was arrested on suspicion of causing injury by dangerous driving.

    The road was closed for a number of hours but has now re-opened.

  9. Weather: Blustery showers and sunny spells

    It will stay rather windy for much of the day across Cumbria with further blustery showers. These will be heavy and perhaps thundery at times but there should be some sunny spells in between.

  10. St Bees school set to be reopened in 2018

    An historic Cumbrian school is preparing to re-open next year following a multimillion-pound investment from a Chinese business.

    St Bees School is now part of the Shenzhen based Full Circle Group of international schools. A new headteacher and senior management team are now in place.

    The school is hoping to have 450 students by 2023.

  11. Woman taken to hospital after car overturns on Castle Way in Carlisle

    A 25-year-old woman has been taken to the Cumberland Infirmary after her car overturned on Castle Way in Carlisle this morning.

    She was the only person in the car and no other vehicle was involved.

    The police say she has minor injuries.

  12. Carlisle United: Curle ready for challenge of turning fortunes around

    Carlisle United manager Keith Curle says he's ready for the challenge of turning their fortunes around after seeing his side go down to a 2-0 defeat at Coventry City last night.

    It means United, who made six changes to their starting 11, have picked up just one point from their last four games and lie 19th in League Two, 10 points off leaders Exeter City.

  13. Police appeal about racist abuse in Brampton

    The police are appealing for information after a man was racially abused by three youths in north Cumbria.

    It happened at 22:00 on Sunday on Cambeck Close in Brampton near Carlisle.

    The police say the man was subjected to verbal abuse by three male youths.

  14. Racing to go ahead in Carlisle today following inspection

    Carlisle’s penultimate flat race meeting of 2017 has been given the go ahead following a precautionary inspection this morning.

    In-form trainer Keith Dalgleish has seven runners with the going described as Heavy. First race is at 14:10 with the final race of eight at 17:40.

  15. Councillors vote against plan to widen Warwick Rd in Carlisle

    Councillors have voted against a plan to widen one of Carlisle's main roads.

    The county council wanted to add an extra lane to ease congestion on Warwick Road. But people living nearby raised safety concerns and said they didn't want trees to be felled.

    Last night, city councillors voted against the proposal in its current form, which means there will be further discussion with the county council.
