Off-roaders not boy racers, says Cumbrian driving experience firm

Off-road track at Tilberthwaite

A Cumbrian company which offers off-road driving experiences has rejected claims that the practice is eroding paths and disturbing the peace of the Lake District.

Some residents around the Tilberthwaite-to-Langdale track are complaining of traffic jams on the fell tops and have asked the Lake District National Park Authority to ban the activity.

The authority says most off-roaders are responsible and it has no evidence a ban would be necessary.

Nick Fieldhouse from Ambleside off-road company Kankku said it was a precision pastime.

By the use of its clever mechanics, about different driving skills, very cleverly travels the terrain in an intelligent way. It isn't there revving and riving and churning the place up.

A once critically endangered native butterfly has now successful re-established itself on marshland in Cumbria after a reintroduction programme.

Volunteers from Patterdale Mountain Rescue were called out over the weekend to help a 52-year-old man who got lost on Dove Crag while trying to reach the Priest Hole cave.

The man was escorted to safety, however, last year a man from Humberside fell to his death there.

Sport: Rugby league wins and Comets drop out of Knockout Cup

BBC Radio Cumbria Sport

Barrow Raiders, Workington Town and Whitehaven all notched up wins in rugby league over the weekend.

In speedway, Workington Comets let a 16 point lead slip away as they crashed out of the Knockout Cup at the end of the second leg at Newcastle Diamonds.

Comets cruised to a 53-57 win at Derwent Park led by British Champion Craig Cook.

But the second leg ended controversially when Cook was excluded from the final heat rerun because his bike had been damaged in the crash in the last race.

That opened the door for Diamonds to win 92-87 on aggregate.

Calls for off-roading ban on popular Lake District route

People living near a popular track used by off-road vehicles in the Lake District have told BBC Cumbria that it's time to consider a ban.

Some residents around the Tilberthwaite to Langdale track say there are now traffic jams on the fell top because of how popular it has become.

It has led a local farmer to consider quitting the tenancy on a farm which has been in his family since the 1960s.

Off-roaders say they follow a voluntary code of conduct and that the problems are being exaggerated.
