  1. City council defends spending £1m to bring in hotel

    The Coventry councillor responsible for regeneration has defended plans to spend more than £1m of its own money to clear a site in the city for a new luxury hotel.

    Jim O'Boyle said: "It's actually a risk that we don't do this, because we won't have beds available for people who come into the city."

    Mr O'Boyle did accept that all investments are a risk, but added: "People have been telling me for years and years and years we've not had a decent hotels in our city centre for 40 or 50 years."

    Indigo Hotels have been lined up to build on the Friargate site and the money will be used prepare it for use.

    Mr O'Boyle said it was difficult to bring in private investors interested in projects like this.

  2. Lido campaign group vow to continue fight

    Campaigners fighting to save the outdoor swimming pool in Kenilworth say they will continue their battle.

    Tomorrow, Warwick District Council is set to sign off plans to replace the facility with a new indoor pool as part of a revamp of the Abbey Fields Leisure Centre, but the Lido Campaign Group has its own alternative proposals.

    The group says it will attend the meeting and challenge the council's predictions of the environmental benefits and increased swimming numbers if the redevelopment goes ahead.

    And it has its own designs, drawn up by local resident Thomas Bates, on display at Kenilworth Books in Talisman Square.

    Those plans also include a plunge pool, play fountain and paddling pool.

  8. Fire on industrial estate 'probably deliberate'

    A fire on a Nuneaton industrial estate which damaged three lorries was probably started deliberately, Warwickshire Police has said.

    It said one or more people are believed to have broken into the site on Pool Road on Sunday night and an investigation is under way to find out how the fires were caused.

  9. Man charged after pistol, ammo and silencer found

    A 23-year-old man has been charged with firearms offences after police found a handgun with a silencer and ammunition during a raid at a house in Coventry.

    West Midlands Police said officers entered a house on Lyndale Road yesterday morning and recovered a Glock pistol.

    The man is due to appear before Coventry magistrates today.

    A 24-year-old woman was also arrested and has been released while more inquiries are carried out.

  10. Motorcyclist 'seriously hurt' in crash

    A motorcyclist has suffered "potentially serious injuries" in a collision with a 4x4 vehicle in Warwickshire.

    West Midlands Ambulance Service said he was found 20ft away from the spot where the crash happened.


    The collision happened at 08:00 on the A46 Alcester Road, between Alcester and Stratford upon Avon, at a junction near the Stag at Redhill pub.

    The motorcyclist was taken to the major trauma centre in Coventry, but the man driving the 4x4 was unhurt.

  11. Ambulance service to take over non-emergency 111 calls

    From November, the non-emergency 111 medical helpline is going to be run across the West Midlands by the region's ambulance service, with the exception of Staffordshire.

    West Midlands Ambulance Service said it plans to integrate the service with its 999 call-handling and that this would mean "patients can be better directed to the most appropriate care".

    WMAS also said that when it takes over from Care UK, there would be fewer 111 patients being sent an ambulance and fewer being sent to accident and emergency departments.

    It added it would look to transfer across staff already working for Care UK.

  12. Probe into cause of fatal fire

    The cause of a fatal house fire in Coventry's being probed by police today.

    At about 04:30, the emergency services were called to a maisonette on Jenner Street, Foleshill.

    The force says the man was found inside the home and died at the scene.

    They're going to carry out a post-mortem examination and added that no arrests have been made.

  13. Man dies in flat fire

    A man's died in a flat fire in Coventry, the ambulance service's said.

    The emergency services were called just before 04:30 today to Jenner Street.

    Firefighters rescued the man from the building but, after he was brought out, paramedics confirmed his death at the scene.

    They add no one else was hurt.

  14. Great British Bake Off contestants revealed for 2019

    A theatre manager from Stratford-upon-Avon is one of the contestants hoping to win this year's Great British Bake Off.

    The contestants along with Noel Fielding, Sandi Toksvig, Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith

    The show returns to Channel 4 next Tuesday, the third series since it moved across from BBC One.

    Michael, 26, is among the contenders trying to produce the best bakes in the famous white tent and says he is especially inspired by the flavours of his Indian heritage.
