  1. Coventry MP Geoffery Robinson to stand down

    A Coventry MP, who's represented a city seat since 1976, has decided not to stand at the next general election.

    Geoffrey Robinson, who has been the MP for Coventry North West, suffered a mini-stroke in December 2018.

    In a letter posted on Twitter he said "every day has been a privilege and a pleasure but it can't go on for ever".

    He also called on the party to select a local candidate to succeed him.

  3. Warwickshire bowled out by Hampshire

  4. Man jailed for 'shocking' rape of a woman

    A man has been jailed for nine years after being found guilty of raping a woman in Nuneaton.

    Mark Partington, 29, of Pear Tree Avenue in the town attacked the woman in Haunchwood Road, also in Nuneaton, in 2017.

    A resident witnessed the "shocking and cowardly" attack on the victim, in her 20s, and called officers to arrest him, said Warwickshire Police.

    He was sentenced at Warwick Crown Court on Friday.

  5. Referendum held on neighbourhood development plan

    Thousands of villagers will have the chance to vote on plans that could help shape development in a large part of rural Solihull.

    Bear at Berkswell pub

    The borough council has confirmed that a referendum on the Berkswell Neighbourhood Development Plan is now scheduled for Thursday, 18 July.

    If a majority of eligible voters support the document – which offers a blueprint for future development in Berkswell parish – then it will be formally adopted.

    Over 18s who lives in Berkswell parish, which covers the village itself and part of neighbouring Balsall Common, are entitled to have their say – although residents must be registered to vote.

  9. Attempted murder arrest after double stabbing

    A man continues to be questioned by police after a man and a boy suffered stab wounds in Coventry.

    The boy, aged 14, and man, aged 20, were injured in Craners Road in the Hillfields area of the city at about 21:00 on Saturday.

    They were taken to hospital by a member of the public and discharged after treatment, police said.

    The 20-year-old, arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, was arrested close to the scene, said West Midlands Police.

  10. Godiva Festival 'big success' despite cancelled acts

    The Godiva Festival has been labelled a "big success" by the city council in Coventry which said 75,000 people had visited the War Memorial site over the weekend.

    A number of acts including Jay1 and MistaJam were cancelled after the Rhythm Tent was closed on Saturday evening.

    The move led to criticism on Twitter, including by Jay1 who said he had wanted to perform in "my own city".

    The "disappointing" closure was taken for safety reasons after the tent reached capacity and barriers were breached, the council said.

    "The safety of all people attending the festival is our number one priority, and thankfully no one was seriously hurt,” said Abdul Salam Khan, the councillor in charge of events.

  11. Severe fire at Coventry workshop

    Fire crews are at the scene of a severe fire in a ground floor workshop in Coventry.

    About 20 firefighters were called to Eden Street shortly before 03:30.

  15. Sibley gets England Lions call

    Warwickshire opening batsman Dom Sibley - English county cricket's top run scorer in 2019 - is one of four players chosen to make their England Lions debut next week against Australia A at Canterbury (14-17 July).

    Kent opener Zak Crawley, Gloucestershire wicketkeeper/batsman James Bracey and Sussex seamer Ollie Robinson are the other newcomers.

    Sibley, who last represented England at Under-19 level in 2014, hit a career-best 244 at Canterbury this week, the highest individual score in the County Championship this season, as he became the first to reach 1,000 first-class runs this season.

    Dom Sibley has made 1,069 runs in first-class cricket this season, starting with his ton for the MCC in the champion county match against Surrey in Dubai in March

    There are three players with Test match experience in the 11-man team, which will be coached by former England coach Andy Flower – surrey wicketkeeper Ben Foakes, Nottinghamshire batsman Ben Duckett and Somerset spinner Jack Leach.

    Leach is joined by Somerset colleague Lewis Gregory, who has taken 44 Championship wickets this season - more than any other seamer.

    As to who will captain the side, that is yet to be announced.

    All the players were due to have been in Championship action for their counties that week.
