  11. Hostage taker to expect 'lengthy' jail sentence

    A man who has admitted taking two people hostage during a siege at a Nuneaton bowling alley can expect a "lengthy custodial sentence" said a judge at Warwickshire Justice Centre today.

    David Clarke, 53, of Ryde Avenue, Nuneaton, spoke only to confirm his name and enter pleas at the hearing today.

    According to a psychiatric report he was suffering from an episode of depression at the time of the seige and had taken a mixture of tramadol, diazepam and vodka.

    Sentencing has now been adjourned for a pre-sentencing report and he's due back in court on 2 March for sentencing.

  12. Cat rescued after spending night on the roof

    A six-month-old cat which was stuck on the roof of a house in Leamington overnight, for 13 hours, has been rescued by the fire service.

    Mabel had climbed out of a window the day before and her owners had been unable to coax her down.

    But as soon as a ladder went up, she leapt on the back of the first firefighter and clung on until she was brought to the ground.

  16. BreakingMan admits taking hostages in bowling alley siege

    A man accused of taking two people hostage during a four-hour siege at a bowling alley in Nuneaton has admitted false imprisonment and being in possession of an imitation firearm.

    David Clarke was arrested after the stand-off at MFA Bowl in Bermuda Park, Nuneaton, in October.

    Appearing at Warwickshire Justice Centre today the 53-year-old, of Ryde Avenue, admitted the following offences:

    • Two counts of false imprisonment
    • Two counts of possession of a bladed article - one samurai sword and one knife
    • Possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence
    • Possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause an indictable offence
    • Criminal damage

    Clarke pleaded not guilty to possessing an imitation firearm which has been accepted by the prosecution.
