Video: Air ambulance blood trial takes off

A new study has been launched to see whether giving blood rather than clear fluid to air ambulance patients before they reach hospital saves more lives.

Currently major trauma patients either receive one or the other to replace lost blood while airborne.

Gavin Perkins, professor of critical care medicine at the University of Warwick, is a chief investigator for the Birmingham-based trial. He says "blood is a scarce resource and we currently don't know when and where the best place to administer is".

Nicholas Crombie, fellow chief investigator and doctor with Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, says ambulances will be randomly stocked with blood products, allowing the research team to investigate mortality rates and biochemical effects "between those who receive blood products and those who receive clear fluid".

Man may have been 'dyed red' after attacking woman

BBC Coventry & Warwickshire

A man was sprayed with a self-defence gel as he tried to attack a woman in Coventry, police say.

The 29 year old woman was walking to work under the A444 bridge on Walsgrave Road, Stoke, when she was grabbed around the neck from behind in the early hours of 19 December.

The man ran off when the woman used the gel.

Police say it stains skin and clothing for up to a week and are appealing for those who might have seen a large man in his thirties - who appeared to have dyed red skin - to get in touch.

Man takes photo between his attackers' blows

A student who was kicked, punched and left with broken teeth managed between blows to take a photo on his phone that police hope will help their investigation.

The 21-year-old victim of the beating was approached by a group of men, one of whom pinned his arms behind his back while another two kicked and punched him before letting him go.

He then took out his phone and took a picture before being beaten for a second time. In addition to broken teeth, he also sustained bruising and swelling in the assault in Gosford Street, in Coventry city centre, at about 04:30 on 5 December.

Police have released the photo and want to identify the individual therein in connection with their investigation.

Train on fire was converted Tube model

A train that caught fire in Kenilworth this afternoon on a line between Coventry and Leamington Spa was being tested.

Stratford company Vivarail has been testing converted London Underground trains designed to run on the mainline between Coventry and Nuneaton.

Rail journalist Fraser Pithie - an eyewitness to the blaze that led to the evacuation of ten people - said the "innovative" units had been tested "up and down the mainline without issue and was looking very very promising".

He said: "It's very unfortunate this has happened. Let's hope that any investigation that takes place will quickly resolve the issues and the project can still go ahead."

Vivarail fire
Fraser Pithie

Eye-witness Fraser Pithie said it was a Vivarail train being tested on the line between Coventry and Leamington Spa.

The freelance rail journalist said the fire was in the underside of the train "making a considerable amount of smoke".

He said: "One would think there's quite a lot of damage done to the equipment underneath the train but obviously until a proper investigation is carried out it's too early to say exactly how serious this fire has been."

The fire service says ten people were evacuated from the three-carriage train.
