Milestones preserved in Lottery project

Six remaining milestones in the county are to be renovated as part of a Lottery-funded project.

There were around 460 milestones or mileposts in Warwickshire in 1839, says the Milestone Society - about 60 remain today.

Most of them were defaced or buried in 1940 when then-Minister of Transport, Sir John Reith, demanded they were removed in case Britain was invaded.

Football: Thomas hungry for more after scoring first Sky Blues goal

BBC Sport

It's always a moment any striker remembers - your first senior goal.

Coventry City's teenager George Thomas felt the buzz of finding the back of the net for the first time in the Sky Blues' 4-2 win at Wycombe in this week's Checkatrade Trophy tie.

The 19-year-old Welshman, who made his City debut at 16, broke his duck in his 22nd appearance and told BBC Coventry and Warwickshire he's hoping it can be the first of many.

It's given me a boost in confidence. I've scored a few for the under-23s but it's always important to get that goal for the first team and hopefully now I can kick on a get a few more."

Former MP Dave Nellist applies to rejoin Labour Party

Former Coventry MP Dave Nellist is among a group of hard-left former Labour members who've applied to rejoin the party to help stop, they say, "further compromise and retreats" to "pacify the Blairites".

Nellist had previously been expelled from the party. He's now general secretary of the Socialist Party.

A Labour spokeswoman said: "It is against Labour's rules to be a member of another political party or organisation which has its own programme, principles and policy, or distinctive and separate propaganda, and which is therefore ineligible for affiliation to the party."
