Driver 'accused of blackmail' after raising concerns about lorry overloading

Jozef Hall

BBC Radio Cambridgeshire

A driver dismissed from working at the Huntingdon depot of supermarket distributors Wincanton says he was accused of blackmail after complaining of dangerous overloading inside lorries.

Dale Underwood
BBC

Letters and a CD had been sent to a Wincanton manager demanding £50,000, or videos of health and safety breaches would be posted on the internet.

Dale Underwood was exonerated by a police investigation and the charges were dropped, but in the meantime he said being suspended from work left him so poor that he was forced to go to food banks to eat.

An employment tribunal found Mr Underwood had been unfairly dismissed for asserting his statutory right to back-pay, not because of the whistleblowing. It also ruled that Mr Underwood's name might well have been forwarded to the police as a result of his disclosures about the safety breaches.

Wincanton said it had not been criticised, nor found to be at fault, for its health and safety or whistleblowing procedures.

Minister set for devolution meetings following alternative proposal from Cambridgeshire

Deborah McGurran

BBC Political editor, East of England

We understand Local Government Secretary Greg Clark is expected to meet East Anglian councillors to the discuss the proposed devolution deal for the region.

It comes after council leaders in Cambridgeshire wrote to the government to propose an alternative deal, which would see two authorities rather than a single one covering Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire.

Devolution deal
BBC

What we can't tell at the moment is whether Mr Clarke will insist that the original deal on the table must stand or whether he's prepared to compromise.

The current deal put forward by the government would see a directly-elected mayor and a single authority for the three counties, with increased powers over transport and planning.
