A doctors surgery run by private health firm has been rated inadequate by a private watchdog.

According to a report from the Care Quality Commission (CQC), Eldene surgery in Swindon - run by the IMH Group - was accused of putting patients health at risk.

The findings were released in a CQC inspection report made public on the 2 July

Labor Councillor for the Park South area, Bazil Solomon, has asked for health secretary Matt Hancock to intervene.

Mr Solomon said: "We don't have access to the surgery as much as we should, as well as children with disabilities...there's lot's of problems there."

Carisbrooke at 172 Canford Cliffs Road

Retirement property specialist McCarthy and Stone has “acquired an interest” in a block of flats in Canford Cliffs.

The Bournemouth-based firm has written to people living close to the Carisbrooke building ahead of a meeting it is holding on July 11.

It said it was in the “very early stages” of drawing up plans for assisted living apartments on the site.

Carisbrooke in Canford Cliffs Road is made up of 17 flats and was built in the 1960s.

At the end of June McCarthy and Stone wrote to people living in the area inviting them to a “workshop event” next week.

Its regional managing director Shane Paull said a public exhibition would be held once these had been produced.

“We are at the very early stages of exploring options to redevelop this site with much-needed extra care accommodation,” he said.

“In the first instance we are looking forward to engaging with close neighbours to the site to understand their views and receive feedback which will be considered as we develop our plans further.”

In a statement the firm said the development would have a bistro restaurant for its residents along with communal leisure spaces. It said it hoped to submit a planning application in the autumn.

  8. More than 15,000 drivers in Somerset paying out "millions" to DVLA

    Driver in a Land Rover

Over the past 12 months, motorists in the BA and TA postcode areas have received 15,159 enforcement actions, from fines to clamping and removal of a vehicle.

The DVLA has teams scouring the county for illegal vehicles - and the owners could face hefty penalties or have their cars impounded.

DVLA Enforcement Spokeswoman Bethan Beasley said: “While the vast majority of motorists do the right thing and tax their vehicles, it is right that we take action against those who don’t tax on time.

"The law is clear and so are the consequences - tax it or lose it. It’s never been easier to tax your car, so there really is no excuse.

"We would rather not have to clamp or remove vehicles, but we’re highlighting the consequences of not taxing.

"Having your vehicle clamped is expensive and inconvenient – and you could end up losing your car.”

The DVLA did not give an exact figure of how much the penalties raised - but said it "ran into the millions".

  9. Severn swimmer searching for kayaker-guide

A nurse who is attempting to swim the length of the River Severn is appealing for an experienced kayaker, to help guide her through the final stage.

Melissa Compton, who began her 220-mile attempt in June, says the stretch between Sharpness and Oldbury-on-Severn is "quite a dangerous estuary" and the kayaker would need to help plan a safe route, while passing her food and water.

    Melissa Compton

Ms Compton, who works at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, is attempting the swim to raise money for the Versus Arthritis charity and aims to finish on Monday.

She had to postpone swimming the final stretch because of low tides in the estuary and earlier in her bid she was hospitalised after "swallowing sewage".
