Children say they feel safer now that a popular rat run cutting through Ashton Gate Primary School in Bristol has been closed to traffic.

The city council decided to use planters to block off the road for 18 months - to see what difference it makes - after parents campaigned to make the crossing safer.

  4. Swindon and Cricklade's heritage railway vandalised

Volunteers at Swindon and Cricklade's heritage railway say they're sickened and devastated after vandals targeted two of their carriages.

Graffiti was found on a vintage Gloucester Rail Cart up from the platform at Blunsdon station.

  6. 'Positive' move to educate parents in Bristol about FGM

Avon and Somerset Police say they now have two active investigations into cases of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

It's illegal here - but it's common in many African countries and is a particular concern in areas of Bristol where many Somali and Sudanese women live.

Earlier a leading FGM charity, Forward, held a meeting in Bristol to share ideas on how perceptions of it can be changed.

They also educated parents about the implications of taking their daughters abroad to have FGM carried out.

  7. Bristol v Fulham match starting soon

Bristol City take on Fulham tonight at Ashton Gate in a re-arranged fixture.

City are currently one place and two points above the Championship relegation zone.

They'll have to do without their leading scorer Tammy Abraham who is out for at least 2 to 3 weeks with a leg injury.

Gloucester's director of rugby has said fly-half Billy Burns, who received lengthy treatment during their victory over Saracens last week, is recovering well.

The Cherry and Whites beat Saracens 31-23 at Kingsholm last Friday but the game was interrupted when Burns went down after a try-saving tackle in the corner and was eventually taken off on a stretcher with an oxygen mask.

David Humphreys says he was taken to hospital but his injuries were not found to be serious.

  9. Businesses question higher than average rates rise

Video caption: It appears the increase from April could depend on the side of the street firms are on.

Companies in Somerset facing big increases in their business rates from April are questioning how the charges have been calculated.

In West Somerset rates are going up by an average of more than 60 per cent - one of the largest rises in the country.

The Valuation Office Agency says it won't comment on individual cases but that rateable values are influenced by a number of factors, including the potential rental value of properties.

Avon and Somerset Police have released CCTV footage of Lewis Ball, who has been missing since 5 February.

The 26-year-old failed to return home from a night out at the Thekla nightclub on The Grove, Bristol.

Officers say the footage shows Mr Ball was still in the area about 20 minutes after he left the nightclub.

  11. Teenagers arrested over bomb hoax call

Two boys aged 15 and 16 have been arrested on suspicion of making a bomb hoax call after businesses on Solstice Park near Amesbury were evacuated yesterday.

The evacuation followed what police said were two suspicious phone calls and saw the premises closed for several hours while officers and a dog carried out searches. Nothing of concern was found.

DS Mike Standing said: "These calls were taken very seriously and caused a great deal of disruption and concern for the public and the businesses in Solstice Park.

"We appreciated the patience and understanding of staff and customers yesterday during the safety evacuation and searches.

"Enquiries locally have quickly identified two suspects and we are satisfied that there is no risk to the public."
