  2. University of Bristol supports disadvantaged pupils in the city

    Money, moving away from home, high grades - people have different reasons for not wanting to go to university, but there are ways around all of those if you want to get a degree. 

    The University of Bristol is to start offering places to students from disadvantaged areas even if they haven't got the top A-level grades.

    The Bristol Scholars project will be launched at St Bede's Catholic College in Bristol.

    A student at the college, Marbel Chawatama, will take up a place in Bristol this autumn, as part of a pilot year for the scholarship scheme.

  3. SAS equipment thefts: Two men jailed

    Two soldiers and an accomplice have been sentenced for "stealing to order" more than £45,000 worth of state-of-the-art equipment from the SAS.

    Sgt Stephen Suffield, who has since resigned from the Royal Logistics Corp, Chippenham, and Sgt Craig Davenport, stole night vision goggles, sniper scopes, rifle aiming devices, body armour, distraction grenades and flares were among the items taken from the MoD's stores at Stirling Lines Army Camp in Hereford.

    They passed the equipment to accomplice Andrew Stevens, from Horndean, Hampshire.

    All three defendants pleaded guilty at Portsmouth Crown Court to an offence of conspiracy to commit theft.

    Stevens was sentenced to two years' imprisonment while Davenport, 30, of Crewe, Cheshire, was jailed for 22 months.

    Suffield, 28, was sentenced to an 18-month prison sentence suspended for two years.

  5. Woman dies after supermarket crash

    An 86-year-old woman from Marlborough has died after a crash in a supermarket car park.

    It happened at the Tesco in Hungerford last Thursday. The woman was a passenger in a car which collided with four other vehicles before hitting the shop wall. 

    She died in hospital the next day. The man driving the car was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

  6. Mayor hits out at government social care plans

    Marvin Rees

    The mayor of Bristol Marvin Rees says adult social care services are at "breaking point".

    He joined other council leaders condemning today's government announcement that they will not receive extra money to deal with social care. 

    The government says that councils may increase the extra council tax they can impose to cover social care costs.

  7. M5 accident: Motorway remains closed

    Police have confirmed that one person has been airlifted to hospital after a crash on the M5 earlier this evening.

    A lorry went through the central reservation of the motorway north of Cheltenham.

    A second person was injured in the accident but their injuries are not thought to be serious.

    Junctions 11A to 8 are expected to remain shut for at least a couple of hours.

    Police say they are attempting to clear the traffic backlog on the diversion routes and have opened up the motorway hard shoulders in both directions.

  9. Beds close at community hospital due to staff shortages

    All in-patient beds at Minehead Community Hospital will be temporarily closed - because of a shortage of nurses. 

    Staff and patients will move to Williton Hospital instead. All other services at Minehead will continue. 

    The Somerset Partnership which runs the hospitals says its been difficult to recruit nurses for some time.

    The initiative follows a rise in the number of people reporting crimes related to internet dating.

  11. Man airlifted to hospital after 'serious' crash closes M5

    M5

    Emergency services are still at the scene of a "serious" multiple vehicle accident which has closed the M5 in Gloucestershire in both directions.

    One person has been airlifted to hospital after a lorry went through the central reservation north of Junction 10 near Cheltenham around 5.15pm.

    Another person has also been taken to hospital but their injuries are not believed to be serious. 

    The motorway remains closed in both directions between J11A and J8 but police have opened the hard shoulder in both directions.

    There are major delays in the area and on diversion routes.

    Bath Rugby face Cardiff at the Rec tonight knowing they have to win if they're to progress in the European Challenge Cup this season.

    The sides met last week in Wales when Bath lost 28-3. 

    Tonight they're boosted by the return of England internationals George Ford and Jonathan Joseph.

  13. M5 accident: Lorry and several cars involved in 'serious' crash

    Police have closed the M5 in Gloucestershire after a lorry crossed over the carriageway of the motorway near Cheltenham.

    Officers say the crash north of Junction 10 initially involved an HGV and a car, but many other vehicles have hit debris on the road.

    The motorway is closed in both directions while police clear the carriageways.

    Diversions are in place between J11A A417 (Gloucester / Brockworth Bypass) and J9 A46 (Tewkesbury).
