  4. 40 Commando Marines exit 'will have a massive knock-on effect'

    As part of a review of Ministry of Defence land, six military bases across the West are to close. 

    Norton Manor Camp, the home of 40 Commando in Taunton, is to be sold off by 2028 with marines moving to the "Plymouth area". 

    Rebecca Pow, MP for Taunton Deane, said their exit would "inevitably have a massive knock-on effect" for the area.

    Other MoD sites in the West include: 

    • RAF Colerne Airfield, Wiltshire - to close by 2018 
    • Leighton House in Westbury, Wiltshire - to close by 2024 
    • Buckley Barracks in Hullavington, Wiltshire - to close by 2029 
    • Beachley Barracks in Gloucestershire - to close by 2027 
    • JSCS Ashchurch (East) in Gloucestershire - to close by 2024
  5. Sir Jimmy Young: An obituary

    Sir Jimmy was born Leslie Ronald Young in Cinderford, Gloucestershire, on 21 September 1921.

    He was keen on music from an early age and learned to play the piano as well as having professional voice training.

    He went on to become a choirboy at Gloucester Cathedral before moving with his family to south Wales.

  6. Bristol Rugby: 'Pretty big' names interested in manager vacancy

    A "very interesting group of people" have put themselves forward to replace Andy Robinson at Bristol Rugby, according to the club chairman.

    Chris Booy has said some "pretty big" names have shown an interest in the job, but he insists they will not rush into naming a new head coach.

  7. Jason Edworthy fined for illegal teeth whitening

    A man has been fined for carrying out illegal teeth whitening, less than three years after being prosecuted for the same offence.

    Jason Edworthy used chlorine dioxide to whiten a woman's teeth at a clinic in Royal Wootton Bassett in February.

    She became suspicious after seeing an undercover report about him on BBC Inside Out West, and complained to the General Dental Council (GDC).

    Edworthy pleaded guilty and was fined £2,000 at Swindon Magistrates' Court.

  8. Sir Jimmy Young dies, aged 95

    Veteran broadcaster Sir Jimmy Young has died aged 95.

    The long-serving DJ, who spent almost three decades at BBC Radio 2, died "peacefully at home" on Monday afternoon with his wife Alicia by his side, a family spokesman said.

    Sir Jimmy was one of the original Radio 1 DJs when the station launched in 1967.

    He was born Leslie Ronald Young in 1921 and was the only child of a miner in Cinderford, Gloucestershire.

  9. Rape arrest jockeys deny 'wrongdoing'

    Two of three jockeys questioned by police on suspicion of the rape of an 18-year-old woman in Wiltshire have denied the allegation.  

    Brendan Powell and Richard Condon released a statement through their lawyer.

    Paul Morris, from BCL Solicitors, said: "Both categorically deny any allegation of criminal wrongdoing and are confident that, in due course, their innocence will become clear to everyone."

    In the past few hour we've had confirmation from the Ministry of Defence that it will close six military bases across the West.

    They include Norton Manor Camp, the home of 40 Commando Marines in Taunton, which is to be sold off by 2028, and Beachley Barracks in Gloucestershire.

    Taunton Town could face Bristol Rovers in the second round of the FA Cup.

    That's a stand-out tie for us in the West, but here's our other draw results:

    • Crawley Town or Bristol Rovers Taunton Town or Barrow

  12. FA Cup draw tonight - five balls to watch out for

    Five teams from the West are involved in the draw for the second round of the FA Cup, which takes place on BBC Two tonight from 7pm.  

    The ball numbers to watch out for, are: 

    • 5 - Taunton Town or Barrow 
    • 7 - Yeovil Town or Solihull Moors 
    • 29 - Eastleigh or Swindon Town
    • 32 - Crawley Town or Bristol Rovers
    • 38 - Cheltenham Town or Crewe Alexandra

    However, each team needs to win their first round replay if they are to progress to the second round.

    Defence secretary Sir Michael Fallon said the closures are part of a long-term strategy to reduce costs and improve efficiency.

  16. Flemish artist's work found in Holburne Museum store

    Wedding Dance in the Open Air - Pieter Bruegel the Younger (detail)

    A painting found in the stores of the Holburne Museum in Bath has been identified as being by Flemish artist Pieter Bruegel the Younger.

    The painting, titled Wedding Dance in the Open Air, was spotted by Jennifer Scott when she took over as the Holburne's director in 2014.

    It was previously thought to be the work of a copyist or follower.
