DJ Derek tributes: 'Such a kind and gentle man'

The documentary maker behind DJ Derek Sweet Memory Sound has paid tribute. Police say it's likely his body was found earlier in Patchway.

Helena Appio said: "He was very warm, he was very understanding. He wasn't in any way prejudiced and he felt he very much had this affinity with the black community."

She added: "I was hoping against hope that he would be found because it's such a mystery, he was such a kind and gentle man. He was a real British eccentric in the most wonderful way."

Superstar DJ and former BBC Radio 1 dance music presenter Rob da Bank has paid tribute to DJ Derek. Derek performed at Bestival, which was organised by Rob.

Rob went on to say that every time he booked Derek for a gig, he'd have to phone him and talk through which bus route to take so he could visit a new Weatherspoons on the way.

"Those phone call were some of the most charming interactions I've ever had with a DJ," he added.

Earlier, police confirmed they strongly believe human remains found at Patchway are that of a missing Bristol man Derek Serpell-Morris, known as DJ Derek.

He had been a resident of St Pauls in Bristol since 1978 and was an accountant for Cadbury before becoming a DJ in his mid-30s. 

Mr Serpell-Morris was known for playing a blend of '60s rocksteady, reggae, ska, dancehall and soul music. 

He worked with the likes of Massive Attack and appeared in Dizzee Rascal's hit music video Dirtee Disco in 2010.

DJ Derek body discovery: Cause of death 'unexplained'

The BBC's Andrew Plant, who has been at the scene in Patchway, said the area where the remains were found, near a roundabout, was just a piece of scrub land, "not the sort of place you might normally venture". 

But someone walking their dog had found the remains on Thursday afternoon. 

He also said police, who are treating the death as “unexplained”, had not ruled out foul play.

DJ Derek: From Cadbury to the Glastonbury Festival

Derek Serpell-Morris was known to thousands of people and has played hundreds of sets at local clubs and pubs, as well as at the Glastonbury Festival.

Known as DJ Derek, he began life on the club scene in Bristol in the 1960s after working as an accountant for confectionery firm Cadbury in Keynsham.

Earlier today, police said there was a very strong likelihood some human remains found in Patchway were those belonging to the popular DJ. His family are being kept informed of the developments.

Family told of latest DJ Derek development

DJ Derek's family have been told of the latest development as police say a body found in Patchway is "very likely" to be him.

Derek Serpell-Morris's disappearance in July prompted widespread searches by police and also walks and campaigns organised by his family to try and find him.

Meanwhile, there have been many more comments on Facebook.

Tributes as body likely to be that of DJ Derek

Police have confirmed human remains found in Patchway on Thursday are "very likely" to belong to the missing Bristol DJ, Derek Serpell-Morris.

The 73-year-old was a popular fixture on the club circuits around Bristol and had thousands of fans.

We've had dozens of comments on the Points West's Facebook page paying tribute to him.

DJ Derek cause of death investigation under way

An investigation into the cause of death of Derek Serpell-Morris, known as DJ Derek, will now take place, police say.

Detectives said the body is "very likely" to be him and a post-mortem examination would be carried out by a Home Office pathologist to find out how he died.

The 73-year-old had gone missing last summer which prompted his family to find his whereabouts.

Human remains found in Patchway on Thursday afternoon, are "very likely" to be that of missing Derek Serpell-Morris, police have said.

The 73-year-old, known as DJ Derek, had been missing since July.

Det Ch Insp Matthew Iddon said: “Earlier today we spoke with the family of Derek Serpell-Morris to inform them of this latest development.

“While we’re not yet in a position to confirm the remains are of Derek, we strongly believe this to be the case due to personal items found at the scene.

“This is a very distressing time for Derek’s family who’ve been carrying out an exhaustive campaign to locate him and raise awareness of his disappearance and our thoughts are very much with them."

Forensics team inspects scrubland after human remains find

Patchway, Bristol where suspected human remains were found

A forensics team has begun inspecting a patch of scrubland at Patchway near Bristol after suspected human remains were found there.

They were discovered yesterday afternoon near the junction of Merlin Road and Highwood Road, at the end of the old Filton Airfield which you can see in our second picture.

Our reporter Andrew Plant has sent us these latest photos where a cordon has been put up.

Becky Watts' dad, Darren Galsworthy, gave an emotional interview to the BBC's Newsnight on Thursday.

His daughter was murdered by her step-brother Nathan Matthews. They lived in St George, Bristol.

Darren told Kirsty Wark that if the death sentence was available for her killers he "would pull the lever himself".

Police have sealed off a piece of land that is at the end of what was Filton Airfield and will be searching there today.

Patchway 'human remains' search continues

Police are searching scrubland, on land which used to be part of Filton airport, following the discovery of what is believed to be human remains.

BBC reporter Chris Kelly who is at the scene, says officers are concentrating their search near a roundabout at the Marks and Spencer end of the Cribbs Causeway shopping centre.

Philip Raby, who campaigned for a referendum told BBC Radio Bristol “it was a bit of a David and Goliath” battle. 

He said he would have liked more but thanked those who had turned out to vote for a mayor.

A passer-by made the discovery yesterday near the Patchway Trading Estate in South Gloucestershire.

Bath says no

Residents of Bath and North East Somerset have rejected the idea of having an elected mayor. 

Votes were counted overnight after yesterday's referendum. 

The result was decisive, with 79% opting to stick with the present system where the leader is chosen by a vote of councillors.
