  9. City food banks have 'busiest year ever'

    Birmingham MP Liam Byrne has told parliament this afternoon that food banks in the second city have had their "busiest year ever" and said "70% of that demand is due to universal credit".

    The Labour MP for Hodge Hill asked the minister to "either pause this crazy roll-out or come to Birmingham and help us raise the tonne and a half of food we need each month".

    In response, minister Alok Sharma said the all-party group on hunger had concluded the reasons for food bank use were "myriad and complex" and it would be wrong to "put it down to any single reason".

  10. Trio deny man's murder

    Three men have pleaded not guilty to the murder of Kristof Zwolinksi.

    A post-mortem examination found Mr Zwolinksi, 47, died at a property in Hunters Road, Lozells on 29 July from blunt force injuries.

    David Olczyk, 28, of Hunters Road, Marcin Goetzke, 39, and Andrze Padewski, 43, both of no fixed address, appeared at Birmingham Crown Court.

    They face a trial beginning 21 January.

  11. Praise for Walsall FC after manager sends ill fan tickets

    There has been praise on social media for the manager of Walsall FC after he sent a man with terminal cancer free tickets to an upcoming game.

    Dave Williams, 59, from Oldbury, said he was "over the moon" to get the tickets boss Dean Keates after his daughter contacted the club for a card.

    Gareth tweeted: "Class act by @WFCOfficial hope the guy has a great day."

    MVPincher added: "Fantastic gesture by Walsall f.c and their manager Dean Keates. Hope it goes some way to making you and your family a little happier. Especially your dad."

    A Walsall fan for more than 40 years, Mr Williams has only been out of the house twice for leisure activities since he was told he had the condition.

    The family are all looking forward to attending the game against Wycombe Wanderers on 27 October.

    "I really can't wait to be there," Mr Williams said.
