"No point crying over spilt bleach"

Duty Manager for Highways England says "it's been a difficult morning"

Duty Manager for Highways England South East, Ian Jobson, said: 

  • A lorry carrying 26 tonnes of bleach overturned, falling from lane 1 and onto the hard shoulder. 
  • They are currently in the process of clearing the debris from the road.
  • Road expected to re-open in two hours - at latest.

  • In Reading, the A4 Bath Road Eastbound is very slow from the M4 all the way towards Reading town centre, the areas around Calcot, Thatcham and Barclay Avenue are looking especially slow.

  • The Queens Road and Oxford Road in Reading has heavier than normal traffic and London Street is also looking slow heading towards London Road and Crown Street.

  • The Kings Road heading out of town is also very slow as is Portman Road.

  •  Peppard Road and Church Street are also slow coming into Caversham.

  • And the A34 is also looking heavy now as people head south towards off the M4 to Newbury.

The M4 in Berkshire is currently closed eastbound between J13 and J11 due to an overturned lorry and subsequent spillage.

There is a signed diversion route in place and eastbound traffic should follow the Hollow Circle diversion symbol via the below route:

Exit the M4 at J13 and taking the 3rd exit, join the A34 southbound.

Lorry back on wheels but major clean-up needed

M4 closed London-bound

Two lanes are closed on the M4 London-bound after a lorry overturned on the carriageway, spilling bleach and diesel on the road.

There is currently heavy congestion between junctions 12 (Theale) and 11 (Reading).

The lorry is now on its wheels but recovery is ongoing, meaning the M4 remains closed.

Lanes are expected to re-open as late as 4pm this afternoon.
