Rest assured, we'll have plenty more wacky hats, weird facts, and - if the forecast is to be believed - appalling weather from Royal Ascot tomorrow.

If you ever want to hear how much Royal Ascot means to the racing world, look no further than Clive Cox.

The Lambourn-based trainer runs the well fancied 'Profitable' in the 3:40 King's Stand Stakes. He told Ady Williams that the event is "precisely what people come into racing to enjoy."

No need for a wake-up call for him tomorrow, then.

Lambourn-based trainer Clive Cox lauds Royal Ascot as the event all trainers train for.

Rain-soaked racegoers have braved bad weather on the first day of this year's Royal Ascot meeting.

Umbrellas were handed to many of the guests at the event - with others compromising their fancy attire with rain ponchos.

More than 30mm of rain has fallen at the course since Friday. The ground was officially described as soft after another 4mm of rain fell overnight.

Tepin has won the 2.30 Queen Anne Stakes, it is the first time an American horse has won the first race of Royal Ascot.

This could be a potential upset after The Pacemaker went ahead early in the race.

In pictures: Queen's arrival at day one of Royal Ascot

The rain broke just in time as the Queen arrived, slightly late, at about 14:15 BST for the Royal Procession at Ascot.

What are Radio Four's tips for today's Ascot?

Unsurprisingly, the Today Programme's tips for the day came from Royal Ascot this morning.

The first is the swiftly approaching 2.30 Queen Anne's Stakes, where Radio Four have picked Cody Bear.

The second is Battaash in the 5.35 Windsor Castle Stakes.

It almost rained on the parade

Luckily the rain has ceased for the Queen's arrival in the Royal procession.

Minutes before however, the rain was bucketing down on all of Ascot's punters.

It was quite a shock for BBC Radio Berkshire's Tim Dellor and Bill Buckley, who could barely hear themselves over the sound of the pounding rain.

One brolley wasn't anywhere near enough.

Speculation on what Her Majesty is wearing can be put to rest. It's not salmon pink, it's not blueberry purple, it's yellow. But is it mustard yellow?

Weather update: Unforgiving but may let up this afternoon

Much to the chagrin of racegoers, the meteorologists were right and rain has been pouring since Royal Ascot opened at 10:00 BST.

The St James's Palace Stakes is the most likely to be dry at 16:20 BST but rain is expected to continue for the Royal Procession at 14:15 BST.

The soft ground makes for hard work

BBC Berkshire sport editor

"The gates opened at the very same moment as the heavens. Royal Ascot is planned for every eventuality, so out scurried the umbrella people. The ground is officially soft.

"Clerk of the course Chris Stickles was as bedraggled as the rest of us when he explained 5mm had fallen 30 minutes. It won't please many owners or trainers.

"They are all here for three Group 1 races which get underway at 2.30pm.

"Her Majesty arrives in the royal procession at 2pm. That goes ahead, despite it being muddy work for the four Windsor Greys, pulling her carriage."

Travel update: Traffic eases around Ascot

Traffic has begun to ease around Royal Ascot after the one-way system was lifted at midday.

Staff at Royal Ascot have said that car parks are also "holding up well".

Royal Ascot is a chance for the flamboyant and creative to go wild with weird and wonderful dresses and, most importantly, hats.

But I'm not even sure Liberace's milliner could have created something as garish as this.

Queen's 'deeply touched' by Royal Ascot tribute

Her Majesty has said she us "deeply touched" after Royal Ascot has renamed the race meets feature event The Gold Cup, in celebration of her 90th birthday.

Queen Elizabeth first visited the race course aged 19, and has since fallen in love with the event and won 23 races with her horses.

How a 'rotund' monarch discovered Ascot

The Queen is well-known for her love of Royal Ascot, having supported the event for more than 60 years.

However, you may not know that the relationship between the Monarchy and the racecourse has lasted for hundreds of years.

As historian Sean Magee explains, it goes back to 1711, when a chariot-bound Queen Anne spotted a clearing that she thought looked ideal for racing.

If you so wish, you can read more on this subject on the BBC News Website.

What day is it?

Sometimes sports editor Tim Dellor can be a bit absent-minded and can't even remember what day of the week it is. Sometimes he'll pretend to be forgetful in a ruse to flirt shamelessly. Thankfully this troupe of colourfully-dressed ladies were able to help him, in both capacities.

Racegoers jolly in their brollies

It wouldn't be a British summer event without a rain shower. The wet weather hasn't dampened the spirits of punters though.

They are pouring into the racecourse themselves with a typical 'stiff upper lip' attitude, but they do so with umbrellas and coats, rather than sun tan lotion and sunglasses like they would have hoped.

Up-to hour-long delays getting into Ascot

The one-way system is already in place and is causing predictable queues of up-to an hour for some.

A truly royal occassion

As the name indicates, Royal Ascot is a rather regal affair. Many members of the Royal family, including the Queen, attend the event every year.

Up to 10-minute delays around Ascot

Rory McAllister

BBC Berkshire travel presenter

The single-lane road closure is now in force in Ascot and will be in place until midday.

There are currently 10 and 15 minute delays on all approaches towards the race ground, and traffic is beginning to build around Ascot.

Bear in mind that the one-way system around the racecourse is clockwise, and will be anti-clockwise once the racing for the day ends.

What time is it? Wine O'Clock!

Horses First Racing's Eamonn Wilmott isn't letting the light rainfall dampen his spirits (excuse the jarring cliche), as he prepares to top up a load of champagne flutes. It's a bit early for us, but after The Windsor Stakes we'll be happy to join you Eamonn!
