  4. Starter homes announced for Central Bedfordshire and Luton

    The government is announcing the first wave of so-called "Starter Homes" to be built on brownfield sites across England.

    They're reserved for first-time buyers under the age of 40 and are sold at a discount of at least 20% below the market value. 

    A total of £1.2bn has been promised to support the scheme and 30 councils including Central Bedfordshire and Luton have now been selected to deliver the developments by 2020. 

    Housing minister Gavin Barwell says the new homes will be a leg-up for people trying to get on the property ladder.

  5. Rail fare rise: Calls for government to replace Govia Thameslink

    Rail passengers are facing higher fares across the UK, as average price increases of 2.3% are introduced from today.

    This comes after commuters in Beds, Herts and Bucks faced a year of disruption to train services. 

    Tina Manning commutes from Leagrave station and has started a petition calling on the government to replace the train operator Govia Thameslink.

    Speaking on BBC Three Counties Radio she explained why she started the petition, saying she "felt helpless as there's only so much commuters can do; we have to buy tickets and we have to work".
