  2. A tribute in sand to Captain Tom

    One Jersey man was so inspired by the story of Capt Tom, he realised he had a very close connection.

    Tim Morton discovered his father was awarded some of the same service medals during World War Two.

    That led to an idea of how to say thanks and with a friend's help, a special sand tribute on St Ouen's Bay was created to mark today's birthday.

    Earlier today Capt Tom was treated to an RAF flypast at his home in Bedfordshire.

  5. Captain Tom's appeal tops £31m on 100th birthday

    Captain Tom Moore's appeal to raise vital funds for the NHS has topped £31m on his 100th birthday.

    The war veteran, who raised the money by walking laps of his garden, has also been made an honorary colonel.

    Earlier, his birthday was also marked with an RAF flypast and birthday greetings from the Queen and prime minister.

    He said it was "extraordinary" to be turning 100, especially with "this many well-wishers".

  6. F1 driver's special birthday gift

    Formula One racing driver Lando Norris was among those across the sporting world to send their birthday wishes to Captain Tom Moore today.

    The McLaren team driver sent one of his racing helmets to Capt Tom's Bedfordshire home and grandson Benjie got the opportunity to pass on the gift.

  7. RSPCA names rescue cat after Captain Tom

    An 11-month-old cat taken in by the RSPCA in West Yorkshire has been named after Captain Tom Moore.

    Capt Tom, originally from Keighley, has raised more than £29m for the NHS by walking laps of his garden.

    Staff at the RSPCA's Halifax, Huddersfield, Bradford and District said they wanted to mark the achievement and Capt Tom's special day by naming their most recent resident after him.

    Fay Gibbons, from the RSPCA, said: “The whole nation has been cheering on Capt Tom Moore with his amazing fundraising.

    "We wanted to wish Tom a very happy 100th birthday and say thank you to such an incredible man, so we thought this would be a lovely way."

    Much like his namesake, the charity say the feline Capt Tom is "active and would love a garden to explore".

  8. Call handler sketches portrait of Captain Tom

    A police call handler has sketched a piece artwork in Capt Tom's honour.

    Bob Godber, who works at Nottinghamshire Police's control room in Mansfield, said he'd resumed a teenage interest in art after retiring as a beat sergeant.

    He said he was inspired to draw Capt Moore, who raised more than £31m for the NHS.

  9. Artist presents Captain Tom with portrait

    An artist has presented Captain Tom Moore with a portrait - resulting in a smile "as warm as his heart".

    Darren Baker, from Coventry, created the image in pastel, which shows Capt Tom giving the thumbs up.


    Mr Baker also presented Capt Tom with a sketch of Keighley, where the former soldier grew up.

    The artist said: "He was over the moon - his smile is as warm as his heart."

  10. Captain Tom 'overwhelmed' by mosaic

    Capt Tom Moore has been shown the mosaic made up of thousands of people from across the UK saluting him for his 100th birthday.

    BBC Local Radio had been encouraging listeners over the past week to take a photo of themselves and their family saluting the fundraiser.

    They were uploaded via the BBC Make a Difference website.

    Tom’s daughter Helen showed the newly-appointed colonel the mosaic made up of 4,000 photos.

    Capt Tom was "overwhelmed" by the gesture and stunned at how many people had taken part.

  11. Knitters pay tribute to Captain Tom

    People have been making knitted tributes to Captain Tom Moore and coronavirus key workers.

    A 30cm (12in) model has been made by the Secret Society of Hertford Crafters, in Hertfordshire.

    It was made to mark the war veteran's 100th birthday and his massive fundraising achievement for the NHS.

    The group hopes its models will help raise money for local charities during the pandemic.

    A Yorkshire poet has penned a poem to pay tribute to 'Colonel' Tom Moore on his 100th birthday.

    Ben Taylor, a Royal Navy petty officer, said: "So from me sir, firstly, 'ay up. I know now tha's residing in t'south.

    "It might be nice for thee to hear happy birthday come out on a Yorkshireman's mouth."

  13. Village crier to ring bell for key workers and Captain Tom

    A village crier will ring his bell and lead the applause for key workers and Captain Tom Moore.

    David Dipple, from Barrow upon Soar in Leicestershire, has been a crier for about 10 years and has been out every week to pay tribute to NHS staff and carers.

    He said he does it to encourage the community to say thank you to front-line workers.

    "It's all very positive, people have been videoing me and putting it on Facebook," said Mr Dipple.

    "Even people who don't know me have said, 'thanks for doing this'."

  14. Captain Tom among village's key worker scarecrows

    Captain Tom Moore features among 35 scarecrows created by residents in a Gloucestershire village honouring the key workers and heroes of the coronavirus lockdown.

    The creation was also deemed this year's winner and the person behind the effigy is donating their prize to charity.

  15. Nation creates birthday salute to Captain Tom

    Thousands of people from across England have submitted pictures of themselves saluting in honour of Captain Tom Moore, which have been turned into a mosaic for his 100th birthday.

    The completed image features nearly 4,000 selfies sent in via the BBC's Make A Difference website.

    BBC Three Counties Radio was behind the idea and Capt Tom was presented with a version of the mosaic at his Bedfordshire home earlier.

  16. 'Barry the Bear' inspired by Captain Tom

    A woman who has been masquerading as a bear called Barry and visiting bored children during lockdown said she was inspired to do so by Captain Tom Moore's efforts.

    Karen Holt said she had been feeling sad youngsters had nothing to look forward to, so decided to buy a costume and entertain them from a safe distance in Bestwood Village, Carlton.

    "We dance, we sing, we play music on a speaker and we get cars, lorries and vans going past to 'beep for Barry'," she said.

    She decided to do something after being inspired by Capt Tom's fundraising feat for NHS charities.

    "It's been fantastic," she said.

    "The children's faces [are great]... one little girl in particular, who had broken her arm, it made her day and she didn't stop talking about it."
