  13. Analysis: Revamp 'needed as soon as possible'

    Tim Parker

    BBC Radio Leicester political reporter

City Mayor Sir Peter Soulsby has said he has been waiting to get the new Haymarket Bus station up and running before tackling what are the last unpedestrianised streets around the Clock Tower.

This latest piece of the city centre street jigsaw comes at a heavy price though - £7m. Why?

Basically, it involves the purchase of land along Mansfield Street and through an existing car park to divert buses and taxis away from the top of Belgrave Gate and Church Gate.

Most businesses I’ve spoken to on Church Gate, nearest the Clock Tower, welcome the development. But, further down towards St Peters Lane there’s some concern that custom from passing bus passengers will be lost.

However, everyone I spoke to agreed the street needs a revamp – and as soon as possible.

This is another of the artist's impressions released by the mayor's office.

If you look closely, the road where the bus is going down, is a new street that is being created as part of the scheme.

It effectively allows for the pedestrianisation to take place near the Clock Tower.
