  1. Burkini fines paid

    As France bans burkinis - full body swimsuits - from some beach resorts, a wealthy businessman has offered to pay any fines imposed on women who have been caught wearing them. 

    The Independent reports Rachid Nekkaz has already paid out more than £200,000 in fines and legal fees.

  2. Judge will be judged on Strictly

    Judge Rinder has been among the growing trending terms on Twitter as it has been announced the TV judge will be a contestant on this season's Strictly Come Dancing. 

  3. Dugdale digs Smith

    Kezia Dugdale, Leader of the Scottish Labour Party, has been trending on Twitter as she is backing Owen Smith to become the next Labour Party leader.

    Since her interview on Radio 4's Today programme this morning, there have been 5,500 tweets that include her name.

    But many on Twitter have responded negatively to Ms Dugdale's announcement - apart from a lone voice, it seems.

  4. From Rio to Tokyo

    The hashtag #RiotoTokyo has been trending since Rio closed their Games and threw forward to the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

    Over 250,000 tweets included the term #RiotoTokyo. Twitter has also added a symbol of the rising sun next to the hashtag to denote the location of the 2020 Games in Japan.

  5. Japanese PM's revelation

    One of the highlights of #Rio2016's #closingceremony was the appearance of Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

    As Brazil handed over the Olympic reins to #Tokyo2020, the Japanese video game character Mario was shown traveling from the other side of the globe to reveal himself as Shinzo Abe.

  7. The "Flying Fish" makes his mark

    As #Rio2016 continues, one winner has celebrated his success in a colourful manner.

    Joseph Schooling, dubbed "The Flying Fish", had a tattoo engraved on his arm after picking up Singapore’s first ever Olympic gold medal for the 100m butterfly swimming race.  

    The medal had extra meaning for the 21-year old as he defeated his childhood, hero Michael Phelps and set an Olympic record time of 50.39 seconds.

  8. Justin Bieber says farewell to Instagram

    The most popular story so far today is #JustinDeactivatedParty with more than 400k tweets.

    It's linked to the news that singer Justin Bieber deleted his Instagram account after some fans abused new girlfriend, Sofia Richie.

    Social media was the arena for a lively debate.

  9. Where's the type?

    If you look closely today, you'll notice that many signs are missing letters.

    Don't worry, it's all in a good cause.

    NHS Blood and Transplant as well as blood donation organisations from 21 other countries including Australia, Japan and Ireland are running the  #MissingType campaign to draw attention to the lack of blood donors.

    So far a healthy 6.3k tweets have been posted with a selection featured below.

    For starters...

    Next week sees the return of Great British Bake Off to BBC One.

    Twelve amateur bakers, including an aerospace engineer and a clergyman, will be trying to follow in the footsteps of last year's winner Nadiya Hussain.

  12. Court of Appeal ruling

    Labour's National Executive Committee (NEC) was within its rights to stop new members voting in its leadership contest, the Court of Appeal has ruled.

    The NEC had decided that full members would not be able to vote if they had not had at least six months' continuous membership up to July 12.

    Reaction on Twitter was lively, with just over 4,000 tweets posted so far.
