A road bridge collapsed into a river in Washington, US, after a girder was hit by an oversized lorry, officials have said. Jodi Boon, in Washington, took this picture shortly after the bridge collapsed into the Skagit River.

Jodi Boon also took this picture after part of the Interstate 5 highway collapsed into the river. State officials said three people were rescued from the Skagit river and there were no fatalities.

Large crowds watched aircraft carrier Ark Royal leave Portsmouth, UK, for the final time on Monday. Andy Burns took this picture of the Royal Navy's former flagship being towed to Turkey for scrap. The carrier was decommissioned early following the 2010 defence review.

Lee Shepherd lives across the road from the Mainetti coathanger factory near Holywell, in North Wales, UK. He said: "I was taking my dog for a walk down by the playing field on the left-hand side of the building. I saw the black smoke in the air. There was no fire crew there at the time." Around 80 firefighters tackled Friday's blaze, with residents being urged to stay indoors because of smoke.

A British Airways (BA) plane had to return to Heathrow Airport, in the UK, to make an emergency landing after black smoke was seen coming from one of its engines. Daniel Bailey captured the A320 on Friday morning at around 08:40. In total 192 flights were cancelled from Heathrow Airport following the emergency landing.

A total of 48 passengers, including children, have been rescued from a boat after it struck a rock and was in danger of sinking off Pembrokeshire, in the UK. Robert Seymour took this picture of the boat being hauled up to the mainland. He said: "We had just been brought back from Skomer on the sister vessel, and were in time to see the Lady Helen coming in."

David Almond sent a photo of a road covered in pot holes. He said: "I would like to point out probably the worst series of pot holes in the UK, in Darwen, Lancashire. These speed humps have for the last five years been breaking up. They are periodically repaired by the insertion of tarmac which doesn't bond to the existing surface and is gone within 48 hours."
