In pictures: Photo Pulitzer Prize Winners

This year's Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography has been awarded to Rodrigo Abd, Narciso Contreras, Khalil Hamra, Manu Brabo and Muhammed Muheisen, all of the Associated Press, for "their compelling coverage of the civil war in Syria".

One of the pictures by Rodrigo Abd shows a boy mourning at the funeral of his father who was killed by a Syrian army sniper in Idlib.
Abd was born in Argentina in 1976, and previously covered political turmoil in Bolivia in 2003 and Haiti in 2004. Here people burn portraits of Syrian President Bashar Al Assad during a demonstration against his regime.
In 2011 Abd covered the revolution in Libya and in 2012 the conflict in Syria. This photograph shows a woman named Aida crying as she recovers from severe injuries after the Syrian army shelled her house in Idlib. Aida's husband and two children were killed in the attack
In early March 2012 Abd observed a man teaching Bilal, 11, how to use a toy rocket-propelled grenade in Idlib, northern Syria.
Another of the winning photographers, Narciso Contreras, is a Mexican freelance photographer whose work focuses on religious communities, human nature and conflict. This picture depicts a rebel sniper in the Jedida district of Aleppo.
Another picture from the same region shows a rebel fighter posing having fired a rocket towards a building where Syrian troops loyal to President Bashar Al Assad were hiding.
In October 2012, Contreras was in Aleppo and took this photograph of an apartment destroyed by tank shelling in the Karm al-Jabel neighbourhood after several days of intense clashes between rebel fighters and the Syrian army.
In another of Contreras's photos a man wheels a severely injured woman to hospital for treatment after an artillery shell landed near a bakery in Aleppo.
Here a wounded Syrian civilian was photographed by Contreras as he tries to escape the line of fire after being targeted by a Syrian army sniper.
This photograph of a wounded woman leaving Dar El Shifa hospital was also taken in Aleppo by Spanish born Manu Brabo.
Since 2007 Brabo has worked on the impact of natural disasters and revolutions. Here blood and used medical supplies spill out of the back door of Dar al-Shifa hospital.
As well as the fighting, Brabo also documented the movement of refugees fleeing to Turkey. Here families cross the border via the Orontes River, near the village of Hacipasa.
Khalil Hamra is a Palestinian-Egyptian photographer who was born in Kuwait in 1979 and who joined AP in 2002. In 2012 he spent time with Free Syrian Army fighters in a house on the outskirts of Aleppo.
Mahmoud, a 21-year-old Palestinian resident of Syria would only give his first name to Hamra as he rested in a field hospital in Anadan in early August. The young man had three gunshot wounds .
