Comic-Con kicks off in San Diego

The annual Comic-Con fan event has kicked off in California, bringing thousands of fans to San Diego as well as a host of stars and film-makers.

Justin Timberlake, Cara Delevingne and Christian Slater were among the first day's celebrity attendees.

Netflix premiered clips from its new Marvel-based superhero shows Luke Cage and Iron Fist at its inaugural Comic-Con "panel" featuring their stars.

The event runs at the San Diego Convention Center until 24 July.

Tens of thousands of fans are expected at the venue, many dressed as their favourite sci-fi, comic book and fantasy characters.

The event is often used to announce casting news, reveal details of new projects and trumpet upcoming collaborations.

  • DreamWorks Animation screened footage from its upcoming film Trolls, featuring the voices of Timberlake and Anna Kendrick.
  • Alec Baldwin was also on hand to show footage from Boss Baby, in which he voices an infant with a grown-up demeanour.
  • Netflix announced a third series of Marvel show Daredevil.
  • MTV announced that the sixth season of its Teen Wolf spin-off would be its last. Lead actor Tyler Posey, pictured below with co-star Dylan Sprayberry, thanked fans for their support of the show over the past five years.

  • French director Luc Besson got a standing ovation after showing scenes from his latest film project, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. The sci-fi fantasy stars model turned actress Delevingne and US actor Dane DeHaan as time-travelling agents investigating galactic landscapes.
  • Christian Slater admitted he has been playing Pokemon Go at a panel promoting the second season of Mr Robot. Grace Gummer, daughter of Meryl Streep, is a new addition to the cast of the USA Network's drama about hi-tech "hacktivism".
  • Disney screened three minutes of its upcoming animated film, Moana, featuring the voice of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.
  • Nickelodeon shared the first images for the new Hey Arnold! film, bringing the animated character back to the big screen.

This weekend's offerings include a Warner Bros showcase on Saturday featuring the casts of upcoming comic book films Suicide Squad (pictured) and Wonder Woman.

Britain's Tom Hiddleston and Eddie Redmayne will also be on hand to discuss their respective roles in Kong: Skull Island and Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Representing the small screen, the cast of The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones will be promoting their new seasons. The stars of eagerly anticipated new shows including 24: Legacy and the Prison Break reboot are also expected to be in attendance.

A special session to celebrate the 30th anniversary of James Cameron's Aliens will also be held, featuring cast members including Sigourney Weaver, Lance Henriksen and the director himself.
