Liza Minnelli has been admitted to a drug and alcohol rehabilitation unit for treatment of substance abuse.

The Oscar-winning actress and singer is said to be making "excellent progress" at the undisclosed unit.

Minnelli, 69, has been open about her previous stints in rehab for alcohol and painkiller addiction, and has been plagued by health problems.

In September, she had back surgery to help relieve an injury that prevented her from performing most of last year.

"Liza Minnelli has valiantly battled substance abuse over the years and whenever she has needed to seek treatment she has done so," her spokesman said in a statement.

The daughter of Hollywood legend Judy Garland, Minnelli won an Academy Award for her role in the 1972 film Cabaret.

She is one of a handful of stars to have also won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award.
